Financing Your Cruise

For those livaboards, cruising the life full time or mostly full time, a survey which tries to answer whether most are financing their lives by typical retirement, a big windfall of money, or just struggling along day to day from dollar to dollar.

This is outside of the boat purchase itself.

Who are you and how do you do it?

I'm watching this one, maybe add whether they expect to be able to continue or is this a temporary thing, they expect the it to end when the money runs out?

i have always relied on the guests to finance the cruise!

What percentage of your income you save rather than spend is only one point that makes this subjective as to how a person prioritizes their lifestyle.

Opps, didn, t realise it was full time cruising. I, m just retired and planning to cruise/crew for the summer on about half my pension.

Saved all our working lives for retirement. Retirement just came earlier than expected due to health reasons. So we have been cruising off our retirement savings for the past 8 years. Would have cost just as much to live on land where we lived as it has to cruise 49 countries thus far on our boat. It takes money to live whether on a boat or in a house. The boat is a lot more fun and interesting to visit other countries and cultures.

We are retired. We will be using the hard earned $$$ we saved over 35 years of working. Always lived well within our means to save 35% of income.

No secret here...We are a few years from getting SSI. So we will use 401K savings, investment income, and $$$ in a normal savings account. Hope we can stay out of the living dollar to dollar category.

Can I jump in and ask a question? Average age of most full time cruisers? I'm waiting until I'm 60, wife wants us to wait until I'm 65, that would give us my Military retirement, SSI, my 401K and significant savings plus her school teacher retirement and her 401K.
I don't want to wait until I'm 65, I think that's too old to start and based on numbers I'm seeing here I don't have to wait that long.

How is your and your wife's health? Your bodies can not get any stronger than they can get now!!!

I wish I had been sailing as my hobby so I would now be ready to cruise. Now I have a lot to learn.

I would not wait.

We left when I was 45 and Michele was 40. Wish we had left even sooner. If you have the money to bridge any funding gaps until other funds kick in, and you have the desire now, then go now.

Activity-wise, the younger you are, the more you will enjoy cruising. I wish I had the energy and activity level of the 6-year old kids I see running and playing around…
