I have 4 outward opening galley portholes right at shin level when walking by.

They get me almost every time

The latches on the inside of all of the locker doors don't just bruise they draw blood almost every day.

I also have to remember when stepping out of the cockpit that the primary winches have it in for my shins.

Aft cabin. I have yet to make journey in and out without beaning myself. And every person who comes aboard cracks their head on the deck beams back there, no matter how much I warn them. I am thinking I will have to line that bit of the ceiling.

When Auto is not installed the pin block on the seat likes to stick you in the tail.

Also the Genoa sheet cleat on the cockpit wall likes to poke you in the back.

Other than that no real gotchas...

The J-24 used to beat the crap outta me. The Genoa winches are in a perfect place to pound your butt when cross sheeting.

The worst cruncher ever was on our Hunter 450. My wife and I would both bash our right knee on the companionway curved stair rail nearly every time we walked through to the stern master cabin. We lived on that boat for a year and constantly hit it. Finally towards the end I figured out why, there's plenty of clearance at eye level, but only ten inches at knee level. The stairs and the rail were designed and installed as an after thought.

On our Oyster, the only head banger is when I lean into the fridge. I clip my forehead on the top edge of the wooden trim because I'm just the perfect height and don't see it.

On my previous boat, the trailing edge of the dodger had a stainless steel grabrail along its entire length. In theory, a great idea for balance int he cockpit. In reality, every time I'd come up the companionway, I'd emerge into the cockpit, turn around and whack! Forehead smacked square on that grabrail.

Bruises don't bother me as much as dripping blood…usually from some unseen meathooks on wire rigging.

Vern Neville reckoned that:

* America's Cup crew suffered 8.6 injuries/1,000 hours of fitness training and 2.2 injuries/1,000 hours of sailing;


* Paralympic sailors suffered 1 injury/10 days of sailing; and


* elite Olympic sailors only had 0.2 injuries/athlete/year. (see the abstract of his and Jon's paper at: The Epidemiology and Aetiology of Injuries in Sailing - Springer)


Price, Spalding, and McKenzie reckoned that the 300 crew on 14 boats doing the 1996 Round the World race suffered 299 injuries, 386 bouts of illness, plus a few burns. (see Patterns of illness and injury encountered in amateur ocean yacht racing: an analysis of the British Telecom Round the World Yacht Race 1996–1997 -- Price et al. 36 (6): 457 -- British Journal of Sports Medicine). Price and friends reckoned padded weather gear">foul weather gear might help.


I reckon all of the above show massive under-reporting. No one reports the real level of bruises, lacerations, strained muscles, stubbed toes, banged shins, bumped heads, and back-ache.

Oh I thought this was a crew wanted thread...

On the topic though a previous boat i had..a sanjuan had my arms bloddy every time i boarded. Never knew how i was getting beat up. Would come in sit down after settling in and find the bleeding. Never felt a thing.

I am not tall, but our boat has only a couple inches extra headroom.
