That 18th birthday is what legaly seperates one from their parents. Take advantage of it! If they didn't convince ya'll how to live then, it's too late now. Or just maybe, their way is not the right way!

I would have to say who care how you live "your" life. The people who are worried that you are "wasting your life".
What is wasteful, enjoying everyday to the fullest by living out your dream to sail the seas and having some kind of adventure or story to share, or working 40-50 hours a week to pay the mortage, and the car payment?

I say the hell with em if they don't approve of your life just simply say "I wasn't hoping to make you happy with my life."

Really who is to say anyone is wasting their own life. Unless of course you get the Harvard degree and decide that "would you like fries or a shake with that" is your new qoute.

I have realized that too many peoepl worry about others more than need be, worry about yourself and that is all.

How have you handled disgruntled family?

I sure would not take them along on a cruise. There is no one meaner, nastier, and more cruel than your family. They know the right buttons to push too.

You make decisions and you may always have doubt and you might be actually wrong. I don't think you need any help from your family in that respect.

It sounds like advice from your family may not be in your best interest. You don't have to hate them to ignore them and that just might be all you get or all you need.

If my family has doubts about our dream of buying a boat, they are intelligently keeping quiet about it. But one college buddy has given me a ration of cr@p about retiring early to travel. He told me I'm wasting my life. "You have so much potential, you could be finding a cure for cancer!" Um, okay. That's noble. But given that I have a degree in engineering then worked in publishing for 15 year, it's not really likely, is it? And all this from a guy whose highest calling is to manage the people who produce the next gee-whiz camera at Logitech. Better cameras for the rats to take pictures of their race...

My sister got a Harvard degree and now she sells used sailboats. How's that for wasting your life?

WOW. And from my time in the high end world of seeing who controls the country (venture groups with Sandy Weil's money, etc...) Every last one of them was Harvard educated. That degree is the ticket to the very pinnacle of society. Interesting that she chose happiness over the other life - I think she made the right choice.

Some people here at my work think I'm crazy for wanting to cross the oceans again. To set sail and leave the daily grind of life. Others think it's cool and one can see the lost inspiration in their eyes when I talk their ears off about my dreams.

Life your life, it's YOUR life, not theirs. Family members may not understand for whatever reasons, but having travelled the world already, I can attest to this very strongly, that the best education, the best memories come from making new friends, in new countries.

All the posts were awesome, and I fully agree. Don't worry or let those who don't understand, or get on your arse regarding your dream, pull you away from your own goal and desire in life!
