Re: Ericson 37 or C&C 38?

Is the C&C 38 the Landfall cruising version - if so, great sailing boat, great cruising layout! As above, have the decks/hull thoroughly evaluated for moisture. I owned a 1993 C&C 37/40XL for 14 years, and never had a moisture issue in the hull/deck. Eventually the rudder.

Good luck.

Neither of those boats are designed for blue water.
I'm kinda looking in the same price range, You said neither of these are designed for blue water. What 35ft average boat is a blue water boat around 15k.

Re: Ericson 37 or C&C 38?

If I recall Saber and J boats have cored hulls.Have a friend with a Ericson 27 badly blistered and in the Bahamas one year the chain plate Port side broke in half . They were glassed into the hull lucky it was the upper the two lowers held the mast up. My C&C did develope a blister from time to time may 50 or so over 20 years none deep . Mine was not cored below the water line. All FWIW

According to George Cuthbertson (and C&C's brochures), all C&C's over 32' were cored to within a foot or so of the keel (except for a few one offs).

In a chat with George many years ago when bad balsa cored hulls were becoming commonplace, I asked why they had done so many boats with balsa. He responded ...... "We never thought anyone would keep these boats for 30 or 40 years". That "30 or 40" should now be amended to "40 or 50".

I found an Ericson 37 & a C&C 38 in my price range (10 to 15k). The main purpose will be liveaboard for now with long term being coastal and then international travel (deep water).

If you had these two boats to pick, what direction would you go?
The Ericson 35s had solid glass hulls, pretty much all big C&Cs are wood cored hulls. If the 37 was a solid glass hull, that would be enough of a difference for me to choose the Ericson.
