Re: Doing Laundry

About a hundred years ago I bought a rubber feed tub from a feed store to do laundry in.
I still have it. You cant ware it out.
1. heat up water on the stove
2. put laundry, soap, water in tub
3. stir in laundry, use toilet plunger for adjitator or feet
4. put laundry in net bag and drag behind you as you sail (make sure you tie it on securely)
5. rinse in fresh water
6. put back in net bag, hang in rigging untill dry
If you dont have a bucket-
1. plug cockpit scuppers
2. wait untill you are in a good rain squall
3. take off clothes, put in cockpit, add soap
4. take bath while you do laundry
5. hope it keeps raining untill you and your laundry are clean
6. climb up in the rigging untill you and your laundry are dry
note: this method not recomended in the pacific northwest as you may die from hypothermia before your laundry gets dry.

Re: Doing Laundry

There was one on my boat. I gave it away. Took up to much space. Only did small loads. Had to fill it from the sink and drain it to the same. Was not a fan. Maybe there are better setups out there but that was my experience.

My lazy mans laundry method is to put whatever in a heavy duty black construction garbage bag. They cost almost nothing. Get them at the hardware store. Some water and liquid soap. And lay it out on the tramps or anywhere where it will get rolled around a little bit. Sun warms it up. A little bit of wave action provides agitation even on anchor. Forget about it for a long time. Open and let it spill out. Free deck wash. Fresh water back in. Repeat. A couple times. After a day, and very little effort, I have a weeks worth of laundry on the lines. Even use a little fabric softer if I’m feeling the urge.

Re: Doing Laundry

i still like my bucket and plunger method--i get more dirt out of my clothing then the flap n fold place, and i can soak overnight...without keeping anyone else out of laundry room, and my boat is a natural clothing dryer...now if i could only make her change out her own halyards from kat furrz......

Re: Doing Laundry

we have a Splendide washer / vented dryer on Manu Kai. The washer works great, the dryer, not so much. Usually hang things out to dry.

Re: Doing Laundry

We have a 4KVA genset, a Citor watermaker (up to 90L/hr) and the older version of this thing. Now, it costs $133 AUS from Caravan Washing Machines | Shop Online CaravansPlus

I also see there is a cheaper one which reports to be usable via an inverter

30 ~40 min of genset [which is my limit] and we have washed 2 loads, replaced the fresh water ( or close enough).

Being in a mostly sunny part of the world, hang the wet stuff to dry in the sun.

Now, the boat is in a marina, dont need the genset.

Re: Doing Laundry

I have a Splendide 2100 washer/dryer combo that is vented to the outside. Have been using it for 5 years. Been living aboard full time for two years. I spent many hours in laundrymats before on previous boats. Really appreciate this machine.

Pieter, I'm amazed by the cost. Is the "load" you speak of the volume that fits within one commercial washing machine? At self service laundry mats here in the US a load washed and dried is typically about $3. I can see why you would want your own machine if the laundry charges a rate of $25/load.

Re: Doing Laundry

I had one on my boat - tiny little thing - didn't take so long or use too much water - but, poor little thing died.
I find it more important than the GPS.

West Marine has one about 23" base. - around $1,100
I bought a Haier from walmart Haier HLP21N 1 Cu. Ft. Portable Washing Machine - Walmart.com
18" footprint only 209 bucks...
I'll let you know how it goes...

Reinforcing again that it's all about the power on a boat! More power = more conveniences. Looks like an excellent setup...

I grew up in Oz. I remember the ladies at the laundromat would do the laundry for young men but not for young women. Because laundry is "women's" work - Times have changed, eh?

When I came to work in Asia as a young single guy, I would take my laundry to the roof of my apartment on Saturdays where the laundry was and read a book while doing laundry. The gaggle of maids would whisper to each other and giggle. I thought because I was so handsome - it really was because a foreigner doing laundry was funny to them. Finally after a couple weekends and after drawing straws or something one came up and offered to do my laundry. I declined a couple times thinking I can do it myself like I always have. Finally I asked how much. $2!!!!!!!! I haven't done laundry since 1984...

If you are near marinas anywhere in SEA bag laundry is cheap and the way to go.

On the hook a small washer would be nice. Dryer in these climes not necessary.

Still skeptical about the pressure washer...

Must be a small size thing i guess... Anyway, any info and experiences are welcome.

Allez-Cat

I'm considering the purchase of the Haier washer for our boat and was wandering if you had already give it a try.

Thanks
