Sure... 90% of our sails are day sails. Even my wife single hands Jedi now and then, when I am fishing or finishing a project etc. We just push a button for the things that you think are difficult on a big boat: steering, hoisting sails, trimming sheets etc.

ciao!
Nick.

Some classes had a better than 50% DNF and some supposedly go fast one design classes had a third DNF.

Randyonr3, mahalo for your work on the race committee. The Three Bridge Fiasco must be about the biggest race on the Bay and a long day on the water with the light winds.
Of the 3 Westsails listed in the race, 1 did not compete, 1 is a Westsail 39 which is actually a Bob Perry design and the other did not finish. A Passport 40 also did not finish (in the same class)
Looking through the results I also see a Corsair 24 tri did not finish. I wonder why....and A J/100 among others.
I guess this means that Bob Perrys boats are slow.

Just kidding! hahahahaha

Good for you! Although to me single-handing means only 1 person is on the boat.

Shes a fine 32' cruising sailboat that is very good value for money. She will do just fine and hold her own with many boats of the same size and might just surprise you with her performance.

Re: Does Anyone Know Westsail Sailboats ?

Locally delivered two in the past, coastal Maine. A 28 and a 32. Tiller is nice, but a wheel is my preference in heavy weather. Both were as indicated by others here. Took some wind to push and a bit on the wet side, but if I was in the bumpy North Atlantic in late fall there's no boat I would feel safer on at that length. See a lot of them cruising through set up for long distance.

I'm guessing this is a bachelor perspective?

I'm married but with 3 small kids - practically a boat bachelor! There will be time later for more family sailing, but for now it means I steal a few hours here and a few hour there to go sailing (by myself)

Re: Does Anyone Know Westsail Sailboats ?

leaky teakies and wetsnails both cruise well and most folks donot understand that basic fact of life and living. is all good.
small cockpit is for draining after the incoming seas swamp it -- something large cockpits cannot do well...DRAIN FAST....mine also has a small cockpit well for easy and rapid drainage.
seems the things that are positive in the design of the boats are those things others who race their boats or drive fast ones complain about. the boats do what they aredesigned to do... cruise in safety and comfort. ENJOY and smooth sailing!!

Re: Does Anyone Know Westsail Sailboats ?

We own the precurser to the Westsail. We own a Colin Archer design Thistle or Eric. Our boat is the sistership to the one Robin Knox-Johnston single handed around the world that earned him a knighthood. Ours, Iolanthe, is a stout little 32 footer. I would trust her in any weather anywhere on the planet. She is a heavy displacement blue water cruiser with a full cast iron keel. She is made almost entirely of teak..Teak on Yacol(?) hull, and everything else is teak. She is a little gem. we lived on her for 10 years before I finally got tired of the tiny little galley among other things. We still own her and sail her in San Francisco Bay. We just recently moved onto a 43 foot Spindrift with so much room, we almost don't know how to act.
The Westsail is the fiberglass version of our little gem. Sturdy little workhorses! BUT I have never heard of one losing it's rudder. I have never heard of one rolling upside down (if it did, it would just roll back up again!). Even the mast is damn near indestructible. The only problem we had is the same problem EVERY wooden boat owner has had...leaks!!!

Re: Does Anyone Know Westsail Sailboats ?

About speed...In the morning in SF Bay, everybody passes us, but when the wind comes up in the afternoon and everyone is running for the marina, we are just starting to have fun! Our little gem likes the stronger winds. I will say it took us quite a few tries before we could master the fact that she turns when she wants to, not when we would want her to! However, when we put a new engine in her to replace the tired old Volvo, it made a bit of a difference. We have just learned that life with Iolanthe is accepting what she is...not a racer!! she will get you there, but just not very quickly! she will, however, get you there NO MATTER WHAT!! She doesn't mind the wind, she doesn't mind a little wave action. She just plows right on through them.
