Re: Does Anyone Know Westsail Sailboats?

Damn , one of those pesky Wetsnails went and did it again. The W32 Saraband won first in class and 2nd overall in the 2010 single handed TransPac She finished in the middle of the pack on elapsed time ahead of a Valiant 40 among others despite a broken boom about halfway to Hawaii. It was a mostly light air race which is definitely not the W32's favorite conditions.

This is a good read about the virtues of full keel boats

Re: Does Anyone Know Westsail Sailboats?

the 43 is a great boat design but there are none to be found. the 28 and 32 are a little too clunky for my taste but some think they are the cat's pajamas.

(SAILING MAGAZINE. May 1986. It deals with a design
analysis and it is by Robert H. Perry. Here are some points
Mr. Perry brings out.)
'In my youth I argued long and hard against the Westsail
type in order to attract attention to my own 'performance
cruiser' goal. I felt certain that the Westsail
suocess...was created by a myth ...... I remember one sunny day
reaching back from Catalina in a well known and performance
respected 40-footer. we slowly overtook a W32. we had about
20 knots apparent and the apparent wind was at about 65
degrees. This Westsail had a big drifter reacher up and it
was really moving along. It took us a painful long time to
pull clear ahead. I earned a new respect for the that, little
'Wetsnail'. `
(Mr. Perry goes on to explain that the modern cruising
boat owes alot to the Westsail line. The line produced a
movement in sailing that was not there previously. Here was
a boat that could make dreams come true. A boat that could
be sailed anywhere.)
In the mid-70's, I was stationed in Alameda and spent many days salivating over the Westsails across the estuary on display. It was where I realized a boat could be a home, and every time I see one my heart flutters. When finally 25 years later a real cruising boat came into our lives, it was Bob Perry's original stepchild, the Hans Christian 34T. Heavy, slow, and undercanvassed, much like the more popular Westsails, though canoe sterned and large cockpit. After a year or so we had Carol Hasse make a proper sized Genoa and the change in character was tremendous! The seakindliness was still there but now she pointed and woke up below 15kts! Either one of these boats will make you happy if you're not the one who wants to day race or has to always GO FAST, they're for the long haul...comfortably. You could do much worse. btw to bad we're on opposite coasts, cause our 34 is going for sail this year and we'd carry a contract. Sadly our family got too big. They are great boats for the dreamer, not the give me now. WESTSAIL THE WORLD

Re: Does Anyone Know Westsail Sailboats ?

The 42 and 43 are the same hull, just different deck and totally different interior layouts because to the midcockpit in the 42. If you want a large full keel design, the 42's are a bargain at their current asking prices. We went head to head with one in our W32 in light air/calm sea conditons and they left us in the dust.

Re: Does Anyone Know Westsail Sailboats ?

He's a columnist for Cruising World Magazine. I'm reading his book "How to Inexpensively and Safely Buy, Outfit & Sail a Small Vessel Around the World". He mentions Westsails as being reliable and sturdy but rather slow as others have mentioned. Hence "Wetsnail". Anyways it's a a good book with some good info. Recommended.

Slow compared to what? If you do a search on this site you will turn up some actual real world race and cruising results that show the boat does just fine when compared with other similar cruising boats.... in fact it does well.

Good luck on taking fattys advice on how to sail around the world.
