Disaster in Cinque Terra - mega yachts beached

I don’t know if anyone has looked at the videos of the reckage this week in Cinque Terra (specifically Rapallo) of the mega yachts washed ashore there but as someone thinking long term about sailing in the MED this does give me some pause... The owners/skippers of these yachts must not have had much warning of the high seas that ultimately broached the sea wall? Is that sort of poor warning to be expected in the med? Did anything else factor into this?

Thanks!

Peter

The question implies that official warnings are more trustworthy than the weather data and captain's judgement call.

If I were a billionaire paying 100+K salaries, my expectations would be pretty high.

Of course weather is inherently chaotic, sh1t happens etc.

But complacency has its costs

Good question, I was thinking the same, here in the eastern carribbean there is a fair warning of such severe storms, swells, 4 to 5 days at least.

I do not believe that happened in Cinque Terra since the towns have old style moorings and smaller.

I believe this happened in La Spezia which is the town/city South and outside of the park area. But looking at the dock wreckage it looks like a good portion of their docks and boats in La Spezia got destroyed. There was a nice waterfront with a pedestrian swing bridge too. My wife and I walked around down at the waterfront last year.

I don't think this is La Spezia. There are no sand beaches in La Spezia proper. I think it is Rapallo.

My boat is located 45 minutes away from La Spezia by car up the Magra river. No damage reported there.

Rapallo is located just east of Portofino North of Cinque Terre a little ways.

According to all the press reports, it's Rapallo which is about 40km North of Cinque Terre.

And I don't see any "mega yachts" in any of the videos or reports. Pretty normal mix of Med motor boats and yachts. Nothing which would have had a highly qualified professional crew.

Therefore, very sad for the ordinary folks who are no doubt the owners of the wrecked boats.

These are two photos I bought while on the Portofino Peninsula. They are of a town called Camogli which is on the West end of the Peninsula opposite RapalloClick image for larger version
