It is a total exception. He was very lucky to find someone who so readily took to his dream.

The odds for him were better than it is for most of us, because he is young enough to meet the women are in the long term backpacking adventure stage of their life. For most of us, we'd look a bit creepy trying to meet women in that age group.

You know you're old when:

You feel like asking the Hooters waitress if her mom is single.

Re: Dating, Relationships livingaboard

Reading these comments reminds me of Eeyore.

"Eeyore." said Owl, "Christopher Robin is giving a party." "Very interesting," said Eeyore. "I suppose they will be sending me down the odd bits which got trodden on. Kind and Thoughtful. Not at all. don't mention it."

Eeyore wouldn't do any better living on a boat.

"I might have known," said Eeyore. "After all, one can't complain. I have my friends. Somebody spoke to me only yesterday. And was it last week or the week before that Rabbit bumped into me and said, 'Bother!'. The Social Round. Always something going on."

Eeyore doesn't have a chance with the ladies!

You know you are old when you remember the Hooters waitress because she went to middle school with your daughter.

You know you are old where your daughter used to babysit the Hooters waitress.

But, you know you are REALLY old where your daughter used to babysit the Hooters waitress' mom.

or you could just be in the south or back country

"...there are three things in life: career, relationships, and hobbies. You can have all three at a very marginal level. You can advance slowly with two. If you really want to get good, you can only pursue one."

And there are two types of people: those who need to be paired up and those who are happy with the ephemeral nature of human relationships. Just stay true to yourself and you'll find someone with the same mindset, but you'll never get everything you want so compromises are a necessary evil, if you really want a long-term relationship.

I found having an au pair or nanny was a great compromise when cruising with the kids,as my wife was not much of a party animal, and au pairs being young like to go out and party once the kids are in bed

At 63 I barely have the energy to keep up with maintenance. Women?

Sure. In other words, if you need to be mated, then you'll do anything to keep the status quo going, which might include stepping out with the nany, sailing less or moving on land. Whatever. Personally, I find the relationship between Fatty Goodlander and his wife Carolyn to be the romantic ideal in a cruising couple, although it's likely embellished for his readers. It's also obvious that he's the Master and Commander of their ship, which would not go over as well when the woman is the captain of her boat. Nothing a good flogging won't cure to keep him in line

I think this is very true. No balanced person was ever an olympic gold medalist. When I started my business I was obsessive, it succeeded thus I'm cruising, my marriage on the other hand!
Personally you must work hard at a relationship doesn't work for me, to many other things I want to put energy into, and I only have so much time and energy. Selfish? Maybe? Im sure some will label that line of thought so.

I've never understood why some think that single people are selfish. We are free to travel the world wherever we want to go, set our own schedules, pair up when the urge hits, remain alone if that's desired, spend our own money on things we want, and all without having to make sure it's OK with another person. Perhaps they're jealous
