Converting a top loading fridge to a freezer

Was wondering how to convert my top loading fridge in the galley to a freezer. I really don't like it as a fridge. It is a pain trying to get what you need out of it. I think it would make a much better freezer. Any help is appreciated.

Well, not a lot of information to work on. Would help to know:

What size/model/brand of compressor and evaporator system.
Engine driven or 12V or 110V?
Power sources: engine alternator only, generator, solar, wind?
Battery capacity?
Mostly plugged in to a dock or living at anchor?
Holding plate or straight evaporator?
Will you try to keep the existing machinery or buy all new?
Cu ft of the box.
How much insulation and what kind.
Power source to r

Assuming nothing.

1. Insulation. Most important factor. For a good freezer you should go for about 6" of good insulation (not liquid mix and pour or spray on). Several very long threads on this subject regarding what type to use.

2. To keep power draw down keep the box size as small as possible. Probably 3-4 cu ft is a good idea.

3. Do you already have a 12V compressor? If not go for a Danfoss BD35 or BD50. 50 for the larger system but the 35 is more efficient.

Hey beach, I have a '76 32 Oday as well and I believe our ice boxs are in the same place. The stock insulation on mine was a shabby 2" lightly taped the the sides, with much air flow around it. I removed the stock box, installed 6 1" layers on the hull, sides, and bottom, doubled the size, and planned to install a engine driven cold plate. Since then I have discovered solar and wont do engine driven, opting for solar. I guess my point is start with the box if you wanna be off the grid, but if you stay plugged in the stock box might do.
