Re: Contemplating Liveaboard -- Need Advice

Hi WaterWriter:
I live near New Kent and at present doing home sitting here in Deltaville. Not sure I haven't heard yet from them but Deltaville Marina may do year round liveaboards. My husband and I are thinking along the same path you are.
You mentioned a couple of marina's in New Kent. May I ask where and the names of them?
We are looking at possibly two years or sooner doing a flat bottom wide body no less than 60' in length houseboat. My husband is retired Navy and knows a lot about boating and the ways of the water. I am a greenhorn and just now started on the safety boaters course and learning the lingo.
Just want to say best of luck and since we are in about the same area maybe our "ships" shall pass in the night!
Good Luck

Jen would love to meet y'all as we say down here My husband and I are in the infancy stage of liveaboard. We have a home to sell and all the prep work and research is still on-going. Keep in touch and let us know how your doing and what you think of the area to which you choose. Fair Winds.

Re: Contemplating Liveaboard -- Need Advice

Saltwater's wife -- thanks! The Richmond Yacht Basin is the one I've checked out -- it's not in New Kent, but closer in (more like on the outskirts of Varina). It seems like a decent operation run by a nice, younger couple who live in the house overlooking the marina. It's relatively small, and they will be dredging soon to accommodate more boats, but it's also quite affordable.

And thank you to everyone for the sage advice! You've really opened my eyes and I realize I have a lot more prep work before I go 'off the grid', so to speak.

Re: Contemplating Liveaboard -- Need Advice

Hi Everyone!

I am back again... knock! knock!

One thing that I didn't see come up in this forum was boat insurance. Buying a boat with cash isn't a problem but buying a boat and going through a financial bank or credit union could be almost impossible for a newbie. No full coverage no loan! All insurance companies are going to ask if the owner has experience with a larger vessel. I say this because I went from a 36' sportfisherman to a 55' sportfisherman and was told that I needed 40 hours of a certified training by a license USCG Captain with proper ratings before the insurance company would even consider issuing me insurance policy. I luck out because I had taken and passed my written Captain's License Test three months before and my Captain license was sitting at the Regional Examination Office awaiting approval. Upon receiving my Captain's License I immediately had to send the insurance company a copy of my License...

Before anyone buys a boat be sure insurance is available to you. Most marinas in the Great Lakes needs a copy of a current marine policy. I image that is the custom almost everywhere in the USA?

Re: Contemplating Liveaboard -- Need Advice

It's always something.
Anyway we are back in Colorado after driving to Florida and visiting schools, marinas and boats for a couple weeks. Strongly considering Boot Key Harbor. Can we PLEASE sell this ranch and move. I have lowered the price for the ranch to $ 330,000. The change from living in the mountains to living on a boat on the water will be an interesting change. Back up here at 8,500 ft I miss warm water and pleasantly warm evenings.
Interestingly enough we went into a health food store in Marathon and chatted with the woman working there. She is from Canon City Colorado right down the road and is living on a boat, go figure.
Now ye I may have changed the subject I have not been on for a few moths and am sorry if I did.
