Coleman propane canisters

hi,

Do fellow cruisers know if it is easy to locate the small coleman propane canisters in the Caribbean (BVI, in particular)? We use them for our magma grill. THANKS!!!!

Just buy the adapter that allows you to refill them from a regular large tank.

thanks - will look into that! our tank is a bit of distance from the grill and neither can move - but that might work.

No, refilling the disposables is pointlessly dangerous. Never store in a living space!

Manchester and Flame King now have DOT approved 1# bottles designed for refilling. Use a 20# BBQ bottle to refill - outside only of course.

You can find the Coleman 1lb propanes for $3.99-$11.99 each. It is worth stocking up when you can find them at a good price. Best prices on Tortola and St. Thomas. I did see $6 for two at the Walmart in Fajardo, PR.

To the OP's original question the KMart on St Thomas would definitely stock those small bottles.

Nonetheless that information is of lesser importance than the prior posters safety-related comments.

no intention of refilling - i'll look into Manchester and flameking - would need to work with magma grill - ie same fittings as coleman. thanks

probably - but the issue is where to snake it since it would be best not to have a long run of hose on deck... we're going to look. thanks!

Better to run a line from the main tank to the grill and get the adapter for a that. But still keep a spare 1# bottle and maybe even the adaptor that allows that to connection the main system

Yes universal standard fitting, called 1"-20

Most light-use camping/tailgating style heaters, BBQ, lamps use them, also make multi port "distribution posts" also adapters

Designed to come off the consumer (RV, BBQ) standard valve fitting, which is called Type 1 QCC, also ACME, which is in turn backward compatible with the older POL, from before overfill protection valves were mandated.

Not to mention flex hoses really should be replaced each year.

Bear in mind that if you try to refill from the main tank, you first need to invert the main tank so that you are transferring liquid, but vapor. (As a practical matter this might be a PITA for some installations.)
