Re: 'Clicking' Noise That Moves Around Boat

Zee.....We know our "local Pelicans" have little room for a brain......I caught one while fishing/casting off my dock while he was in flight....not a pretty sight....... Couldn't do anything but finally cut the line. It wasn't about to let me pull it in to try n get the hook out.

I can imagine how hilarious it must have been watching that Pelican try to figure out why that Blue sky was so hard on it's head...lol

Okay for you Weavis. When you wake up and a zombie has clawed its way in and is feasting on your leg. You know they sound like crackling shrimp but will eat your leg!

Re: 'Clicking' Noise That Moves Around Boat

Besides all the marine life already mentioned, which I have experienced, actual boat noises I've also discovered, the bow roller squeaking, solution, lubricate; anchor chain rubbing on the bow roller, solution, adjust chain position; roller furling turning block squeaking, solution, tension the line; jib sheet tapping the deck or hull, solution tension the sheet; bulkhead squeaking rubbing on the deck interface, jam in a shim; plexi-glass panels tapping in it's track, solution, fold a piece of cardboard and jam between panels; lines tapping the mast...; tapping, rolling, rubbing sounds on deck( at 3 am), take toys away from cat(the wiffle ball golf balls was a really bad idea, she loved, I needed my sleep). It's been an interesting couple of years on the boat, quite a few mid-night excursions on deck with a flash light, laying silent, waiting for the noise to repeat its self., But wouldn't trade ti for the world.

Re: 'Clicking' Noise That Moves Around Boat

A friend had a heavy creak in his boat. He looked and looked for the things that were grinding together. One day his dad was visiting, and he listened for it. "It's in here" he said pointing to the centerboard trunk. So he dove on the boat and went down and checked what was happening with the centerboard. He found a small croaker living inside the centerboard trunk. When the boat swayed in another boat's wash the croaker would go "GROOONNNNKKKK!"

Did you ever consider that your boat may be haunted? Just a thought...

Re: 'Clicking' Noise That Moves Around Boat

Is it a wooden boat? Might be count-down to sinking.

The deathwatch beetle, Xestobium rufovillosum, is a woodboring beetle. The adult beetle is 7 millimetres (0.28 in) long, while the xylophagous larvae are up to 11 mm (0.43 in) long.

To attract mates, these woodborers create a tapping or ticking sound that can be heard in the rafters of old buildings on quiet summer nights. They are therefore associated with quiet, sleepless nights and are named for the vigil (watch) kept beside the dying or dead, and by extension the superstitious have seen the death watch as an omen of impending death. I believe Zee to be a lot further South than what you are referring to. She said "Penguins."

Pelicans will take lures but I believe Penguins hitting the hull on starting to fly is just plain goofy. They don't fly.

Re: 'Clicking' Noise That Moves Around Boat

I have yet to be on a boat where there is no click / crackle due to static discharge.

Re: 'Clicking' Noise That Moves Around Boat

My favorite "things that go bump in the night" are the sea lions using the boat hull to carom off as they pursue dinner. I thought a jet ski had hit us. As I rushed on deck I could hear them snorting and cavorting all around us.

Those popcorn/pistol shrimps have freshwater cousins so they could be up the Potomac. Or more likely you are hearing the sonic boom caused by the vacuum and subsequent inrushing air caused by the lack of all grey matter in DC. BOTH parties are at fault in this one.

HA HAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!

And now I think we can all agree that pelicans and sea lions or the basteeeerds of the sea...

I've had the "what the hell was that!?" bump... (minor collision really)

and have lost more dang fish on a hook to the flying brown rats...

Re: 'Clicking' Noise That Moves Around Boat

We have a different sound, a rattle. Steel boat and so thing vibrates when the engines running. It's SOMEWHERE around the aft cabin, but where? I just know it's a bolt loose in a hole with a frozen nut, just sounds like that . But with the aft cabin it's like being in a barrel. The sound is everywhere all at once.
