Casting off all lines?

Well now, this can be a philosophical question upon which copious amounts of the finest wine can be relied upon to produce the right answer. However, before my wife and I cast off cruising, we decided to do some serious preparation. She below decks and I above. Then came time for my deep voiced and manly instruction 'cast off all lines' as I began to reverse from the pontoon. Lines away but no move and worse still I had no one else to blame. She smiled forgivingly. I had cleaned the waterline from the dinghy and of course secured a masthead halyard to the pontoon which remained secured !!
Like on all marinas, no one was watching, 'really'.

Re: casting off all lines?

Obviously the crew was to blame. You did say "Cast off ALL lines."

Re: Casting off all lines?

Oysterbob, thanks for sharing and welcome to the community. Many of us have done something similar.

Back at a time before cell phones we had cast off all lines except our phone cord. It snapped when we were waving goodbye to our neighbors.

Re: Casting off all lines?

I did the same with my shore power cable- my solution- more throttle. Oops.

When docking or leaving I always remind my much better half that I'm shouting TOO you not AT you.

Re: Casting off all lines?

I don't get it. What does a masthead halyard have to do with cleaning your waterline? Were you heeling the boat over by attaching it to the dock to get to the waterline?. is a "pontoon" what we call a finger pier?. A floating pier? I think "pontoon" on a party boat or a seaplane...

You got it.

Heeling the boat and getting all the crud on one side around the waterline up a foot or so makes it much easier to scrub from a dinghy.

Re: Casting off all lines?

Welcome to CF oysterbob!

We 'second' FamilyVan's remark (re the shore power cable experience) altho without the "more throttle" response and (happily) retrieved the cable intact with pride the only damage.

Fair winds and following seas for your cruising!!
