Re: Can you recommend used liveaboards in the 35-45 LOA range?

I must put my 2 cents in here. I really enjoy my Morgan 36 OI, Ketch, with its center cockpit, and split accommodations, and two heads with showers. Also the fact there is decent headroom for someone who is 6'2". The only negative is the engine space is a bit tight for me. If you can find one you will probably want to up grade the electronics and electrical systems. I had a great time doing the ICW from N.C. to Key West and back up to St. Pete. and being shallow draft was a plus. Now she is up here in Puget Sound, WA and I am having a great time.

Good luck in your search....

These would be on my list:

Cal 40, Swan 44, C&C Landfall 38, Bristol 40, Tayana 37, PSC 37, HR 42, Valiant 40.

You won't get much of a catamaran in your price range compared to a monohull.

I learned to sail on an OI36 and loved it. Arguably the roomiest 36' sailboat ever made. Wasn't much sailing to windward but was fast enough off the wind and would motorsail upwind very well.

The super shallow draft got me into places most other 36' boats couldn't touch.

You have not provided a very important piece of information:

How much money do you have to spend???

Its just for chesapeak, ICW, florida keys, bahamas - maybe caribbean - no ocean crossing.
I like ones that have a designated nav table/station. The ones with the bigger bed (like the Irwin Center Cockpit) are also two areas. I have been researching most smaller 27-35 foot boats but this new range i am looking in I really dont have much of a clue of where to start looking and researching except for the Morgan and the Irwin and I like both.
Thanks for your boat recommendations!
Hi.

A few more friendly comments meant to help you:

1. As you will no doubt notice, many people will NOT read all the comments posted prior to answering your initial (topmost) post. Consequently, you will see people making mention of the same thing that is missing (the budget) in your original post.

2. If I were you, I would send a friendly request to a forum moderator to insert the "budget" statement into your original post. I think they can do that after the fact as they can edit your post. This could save some frustration and wasted energy for others.

3. I found SKIPMAC's post humorous (in a good way), because I saw it as showing how wide the spectrum of boats could be if there were no budget limits. I also know him to be one of the friendliest and most helpful members here. I did not see his post as snarky or sarcastic or personal or intended to make you look like an idiot etc.

4. As I see it, your budget is enough to find a very nice live aboard if one looks at older boats (1980s and early 1990s).

Good luck on your search and show us what you eventually buy.

Re: Can you recommend used liveaboards in the 35-45 LOA range?

If you're looking for liveaboard ability first and foremost and not likely to be crossing serious blue water of any great distance, I would recommend you consider a tri-cabin trawler, i.e a motor boat.

Less cost per internal sq ft. Less draft for the ICW or carrying on to do the "loop".

This may seem blasphemous to many but there's a lot to be admired about steering in your Jammie's.

The CSY 44 above is located St. Maarten and for sale.
Previous owner installed a brand new 85 HP Perkins and new diesel gen set.
A bargain at $75K, but owner got sick and have to sell.
No broker involved, contact me for more info.

Your boat?

CSY 44s are fantastic liveaboards. Huge interior space, giant, private aft cabin, giant water tanks, very, very solidly built. Also no core anywhere in the hull or deck so no concern at all about wet core.

With a new engine and generator that is a great bargain. If I didn't have a boat already I would seriously consider this one.

Re: Can you recommend used liveaboards in the 35-45 LOA range?

Aye, not my boat.
Friend got cancer, helping him.
They spent twice as much and been sailing Bahamas/Caribbean, etc.
The boat has been in storage for a while, but recently commissioned and launched. Should be ready to go, or close to it.
On the French side in St. Maarten.
Strong boat, lots of room and inside steering station...

Re: Can you recommend used liveaboards in the 35-45 LOA range?

Actually STEADY HAND is correct. I did not read ALL of the posts initially. I went back and found that your budget is $75K. That should buy you a reasonable "live aboard". However, buying the boat is only the first installment for that "hole in the water lined with fiberglass in which you throw your money". And you have to consider resale value - as, like first time (?) buyers, your tastes and needs change and you'll be looking for something else in a few years. Someone suggested "Yachtworld.com" - a good suggestion - as that will give you an idea of what various boats go for these days. Nonetheless, few people actually make a profit on buying and selling a boat. The only boat I ever made a "profit" on was a Hinckley Bermuda 40 yawl (that wasn't a bad liveaboard - bought her for $119K sold her for $190K). However, my wife was quick to point out that if I added up all the Hinckley yard bills over the years I may have bought that boat two times over!!!

Good luck - you'll have a great time lookin' !

Ha, I had a Bill Tripp Bermuda 44 yawl: Paid $30k, put $30k into it and sold it for $30k?
The only boat I have made a "profit" on was stolen before I could pump too much money into it, then the insurance company paid out twice what I purchased the boat for, thanks to a favorable survey...

Re: Can you recommend used liveaboards in the 35-45 LOA range?

Suggest evaluating a Kadey Lrigen 38 Cutter. Designed by Jim Krogen for himself as a Bahammas live aboard. More storage than you will find on boats over 50 ft.

Price range is reasonable. Great saing boat as well. Available as dual centerboard or fixed keel 3' and 5' drafts.
