Bug out boat

I had never heard the term "bug out boat" until this guy asked if our boat was our bug out boat. I said sure, even though I don't know what a bug out boat is. I assume a self sufficient ship? We aren't, I need to shop weekly.

Sounds like survivalism talk. Only makes sense for a boat if you are really good at fishing I would guess.

Yes, Doomer speak. I think it started with "bug out bag" as in a grab bag, or ditch bag. One would have a bug out location/cabin or such.

I consider our boat a bug out boat as we live in center city Philadelphia (for a couple of more months) and if the SHTF we would need some place to be not in the maw of the beast. We live on the boat part time year round and keep her equipped to leave on short notice. Surely not typical, but useful and fun, and good for making the transition to full time live aboard.

Yes, it is a survivalist term. A bug-out vehicle would be used to escape during an emergency situation. So when the bombs start falling, or the zombies are coming, you jump in your bug-out vehicle and head to the hills (or to sea in this case). It would carry all your emergency gear and supplies of food and equipment.
If asked again, I would recommend you say "no, you couldn't live onboard for more than few days without going to the store". Otherwise when the zombies do come you could find that your boat has left on its own with that curious questioner.

Yes your boat would be your god ( get out of dodge) vessel. Do you keep a couple weeks emergency food and a full water tank on the boat? Are your fuel tanks mostly full? If not then it is a good idea to just in case of emergency. ( think natural disaster)

Yup to all that.

I don't think it would take bombs falling, just a really bad decision by a cop on a hot summers night. Remember, we live in a center city neighborhood. Until recently we kept a Porte Bote as we are only a few blocks from the river, which then leads to our sailboat.

There's nothing wrong at all with being prepared for a disaster.
Our boat is pretty self sufficient except for growing food.

However, after seeing one of those bug out vehicles on TV, I suspect someone has overdone it a bit.
The vehicle had armor piercing proof sides and even all the glass, 6 wheel drive etc.
The thing was said to have covered all the bases, but didn't have anything in the way of extra fuel storage that I could see (and that was the first thing I looked for during the show).
The thing had somewhere North of 20 THOUSAND pounds curb weight, and I'll bet it doesn't get more than 5 mpg. That's not going to get anyone very far away from hard core zombies if SHTF...

You might look into a bug-out cigarette boat. Kinda tough to outrun a pyroclastic flow or a lahar!

Shouldn't a bug out boat have armor plating and at least a .50 cal machine gun in a turret? Plus about 500 gal of fuel, 1000 gal of water, food to last 12 months, filtered air supply, radiation protection, anti-mine technology, flame thrower? Have to have a way to fend off all those pesky liberals when they decide to (completely) take over the country, via the UN of course. Otherwise you may be sent to a holding cell in some abandoned Walmart in Texas. Don't go down without a fight. And, when you are done your boat should look like a nautical version of a Mad Max road tank. Think sailboat as a sister ship to the car up above.
