Here in the US the east and west coast have the 3nm limit to pump black water. Not so in the Gulf of Mexico states, some are 9nm and others are 12nm. We decided to install a type 1 MSD aboard our cat. Best thing I ever did, with the exception of a NDZ our main head is a treated flow through system. Very little maintenance and can be used in brackish and fresh water with a salt injector.

There are places in the USA where even treated sewage cannot be legally discharged. The ICW near Hilton Head, SC is an example.

Dannc, the MSD we used was the Raritan ELECTRO SCAN, comes in 12 & 24 volt.

This is what we call a NDZ ( no discharge zone ). Alabama has 1 and Florida has 3. Other states also have them and you can't even discharge gray water.

Our vessel is set for this to with a type 3 MSD which is nothing more than a holding tank.

NDZ are for all boats and all discharges. They even restrict the washing of your boat. Mobile Bay in Alabama takes it that far.
