Our daughter will be moving into an appartment in a few months for her studies. As soon as she is out, the cable is out and the stove will probably go with her. The fridge would too but it is too high.

Reduce before moving onto the boat, that is the best advice!!

P.S. When I was young, my parents would bring us camping every summer and we had the best of times with just the essential.

We did a similar thing, sold everything but then had to find the kids somewhere to live.. They have the forward bunks!!!

These are NOT the reasons we are together, but they don't hurt. The only part of her pention I want anything to do with is the PX and Marinia privledges. (not even the PX). And that is only gravy on a great relationship.

Is Sin in the north or the south. I have heard of so may people living in it that it must be a big place

Our girls are young ladies now. Two of them have left us a few years ago now. Once the last one is out, there will be no turning back, our door will be closed, exept for vacations in the Caribbeans

In response to the question, I quote H.D. Thoreau "Simplicity! Simplicity! Simplicity!"

If one is to live aboard, one must simplify. Rid yourself of everything you really don't need (donate it or give it to someone who might need it) and keep it simple.

Buy a copy of Walden, read it and keep a journal of your thoughts as you read it. It will make you think twice about what you think you need. Find your footprint and live within it.

Thoreau said: “As you simplify your life, the laws of the universe will be simpler; solitude will not be solitude, poverty will not be poverty, nor weakness weakness.”

(Also, make sure you leave the dock more than once a month - otherwise, as svBeBe said above, "you are just camping out")

There are lots of things which are important, and the priority varies as much as the people. That’s obvious from all the different replies. Having lived aboard and cruised with my family for eight years straight, I personally think the best tip has not been directly stated—money! and the more the better! With enough of it you can do anything on a boat, but without a ready supply life aboard can be very difficult.

I have watched heaps of people run out of cash in the marina we are at cos they are getting everyone else to work on there boats.

We finished our boat (including purchase) for sometimes 1/4 these peoples refit budget. plus I know every inch of my boat better than anyone I could pay.

Im not a boat worker type, I learnt as I went, just like everyone else can, its really not that hard or complex. People that have a financial interest in making things hard to do by yourself will often say otherwise but its rubbish. if you can assemble ikea furniture you will be able to tackle 80% of yacht stuff. the balance you can research and learn.
