Best Single Liveaboard Tip

What is the best single livaboard tip you can pass on to others?

You are living "The Dream", loosen up! Keep smiling. Life is good. Don't forget your paper charts.
Eighteen years living aboard was not enough.

Before I did it, I considered the BIG compromises I would have to make. My closet had accumulated a lot of clothes. I put the clothes I felt I really needed in three large plastic bins. If i wanted to wear something else, something had to come OUT of the bin -- permanently -- for something else to go in.

I also realized that I might not find the boat I wanted with a refrigerator. I moved an ice cooler in the kitchen and started using it instead of the refrigerator. That's exactly how it turned out. I found that by going to the store every other day instead of once a week it was quite workable. I did use my fridge's ice maker, because I determined that I wanted a marina with ice as part of the deal.

I already knew I could live in the space because I'd rented an RV once and absolutely loved it. And that had a husband and two small children in tow.

I actually think that renting an RV and living in it for a couple of weeks might teach a person a lot about living aboard, especially, what is REALLY essential, in terms of material goods, in your life.

What used to be essential is now just a memory. it makes you realise just how materialisic you used to be.

My tip is to get a Seagull tap. Purified water strait from the tank. No lugging plastic bottles, saves a fortune and no more disposing of said bottles.

I read that and immediately googled "seagull tap." I found a dancing seagull, a tap dancing seagull, and a laughing seagull, but no "seagull tap."

Can you elaborate on what this thing is, now that you have my complete and undivided attention?

Living aboard is not cruising. Cast off the dock lines, or you are just camping out.

Definitely! But it's a good tip. I can attest to the discomfort of not having fresh drinking water at you're own tap. I think I'm getting one of these instead. Much cheaper, but will do the job fairly well. I've spent weeks trying to get my tank clean and finally have it now. But, I'd like to know the water I put in my tanks from now on is gonna be as clean as possible when I drink it.

Yep you got that right.
Many many people will live aboard and never cruise. Living aboard (especially on a dock) is really easy and not much advise needed other than don't sink the boat . Once you leave the dock then there seems to be a million things that you need to think of.

Re: Best Single Livaboard Tip

Had this for years, but the new technology makes it dated, and the price tag screams "boat". As for my single tip: Don't make it like camping or you will tire of it quickly, especially in the beginning. You can always simplify as you go, but make yourself as comfortable as possible, and then decide what to cut out. Remember, it's LIVE aboard, not CAMP aboard. CAMP is for weekends and vacations.

Install a good head. I installed an electric one with a household size bowl, freshwater rinse, and one button operation. It made the female half of the equation very happy. I've been using it everyday for 3+ yrs without any issues besides guests that try to flush the most bizarre things down it.

Top three things I have installed that made liveaboard life so much nicer:
1) a full size, electric, freshwater flush head
2) a compact dishwasher
3) a washer and dryer (space alotting)

I'm a liveaboard, not a cruiser (yet). Still have some debts to payoff before I can castoff for an extended period. But I see the light at the end of the tunnel

Rule 1: Leave it ashore.
Rule 2: Don't put it down, put it away.

We've given up living aboard for cruising. Same rules apply, but cruising is ever so much more interesting and fun.
