I want to add a memory foam to my forward berth...the question I have is really two parts...1. Do i removed the existing 4 inch form that is presently there and replace it with memeory foam ?...2. place and overlay of 2" memeory form over existing foam ?

Put it over the top. Most memory foam mattress have a harder foam layer on the bottom then firm then soft.

We've done our 3rd try at refitting mattress and like our 3rd the best. Did toppers and ..... Anyway
Put down 1/2" blue board to help share the load over the slats. Left room to let it move air. When to an IKEA store and got the memory foam bed that worked best for us..$350 ish. LOVE THIS SET UP. Other two staterooms we did 1/2 blue board and added foam toppers.

We put a 2" memory foam layer on top of the standard mattress, and it worked jusst fine for us. My wife had back problems, and the memory foam really helped.

We have had memory foam mattress on our last 2 boats! One a custom made one to fit. And one that was just a queen temperpedic. Both were good the standard queen temper, was the best! will never sleep on anything else! but memory foam!! nothing like a GOOD nights sleep! or even a short nap between watchs !! Just our 2 cents

We put two layers over the existing. Great for my back and hip.
Also, being closed cell, they stop moisture going into the lower layers. No damp or mould under mattress problem. Make sure existing foam is dry first.

Memory foam is great! I sleep on one now and will continue to use it when I get a boat (saving now) since I sleep so much better on it. I got my mattress at wal-mart of all places. They have pretty good and cheap (pricewise) models and they'll deliver the size you want free. I've seen several people mention cutting theirs to fit using electric knives, like the kind you carve up a turkey with.

Looking at memory foam, but unlike many of you, I can't put it on top of an existing mattress. There just isn't enough headroom.

Wondering if a memory foam futon mattress would work. It would go directly on a hard plywood surface. It can't be any thicker than 5" or 6" at the most.

Anyone try this?

That's basically what I have 2 inches of a firm foam then 2 inches of a middle grade then 2 inches of the pure soft memory foam all over a plywood base. I sleep like a dream and I've had spinal fusion surgery!

Does anyone find the memory foam hot? We'd been warned off it for that reason.

I tried a few mattress types and found the softer the foam the hotter. Makes sense as one tends to sink further into the foam and that makes you hot as it conforms around you. So firmer foam is cooler in my opinion.

Yes, except in winter, then it's cold no joke. I have the expensive full tempurpedic memory foam bed in the house and a Walmart memory foam topper in the RV. I sleep better in the RV. You get 99% of the benefit at 5% of the cost with a topper. If you go the high dollar route, be very sure you get the waterproof slip cover that tempurpedic sells, it's not plastic at all, Goretex maybe? Anyway right after we got the mattress we went on a short trip which must have ticked off the cat as she peed in the bed. I'm sure without the water proof cover it would have ruined the mattress, but not a drop got through.
