I was 50-55 yrs old & wife was 40-45. San Diego to Caribbean. Then came up to NYC and lived on the boat while I finished my tech career. Then back to Chesapeake Bay area where I retired and wife did real-estate for another 10 years. We met many much younger, many in their 40s, many older. Not many 70+ but sure there are some.

On a backpacker trip in South east Asia two years ago I bought a 32 years old boat. I spend half of the year at home and and the other half on the boat sailing around The south China sea and making maintenance. Once my last properties has been sold, I will be a full time sailor and eventually bringing the boat back to Europe...

I'm a 67 years old single sailor who hasn't been sailing for almost 30 years ;o

I retired at age 56 and went cruising that year. I am in Tonga about to leave for New Zealand. I am now 63. You sound like you are on the same track ad I and many others.
I picked a good safe but also good sailing boat. Southern Cross 39. I realized as I am getting older I wanted a boat that would have a kindly dry ride. A big advantage as I plan on being out here when I am 80.Good you are planning ahead. Be sure you realize the truth of the words... A hole in the water to pour your money into. The cost of a 20plus year old fifty footer may well be about the same as a similar age forty footer. The hole is just exponentially larger. Go on Find a Crew and crew for someone else to see if you really are cut out for it . I cruise 365. Average age 60.

We are 68 and 70. We've been sailing for 48 years costal only. Sailed East coast of USA Florida to Connecticut and West coast from Santa Barbara to Ensenada. Moved aboard full time 4 years ago and we are still enjoying cruising Southern California.

Over the years we've had boats 14', 24' and 42' which we have now.

We've met people of every age out cruising. Most are open and friendly. That is perhaps the best part of cruising. Yes you will find most cruisers are retirement age and can afford to go, but there are also many younger people and families. Don't worry about that. Just go and have fun.

Who in this world "plans" to live to any age? Long life is usually the result of living free of illnesses, drugs, accidental death etc. The one thing about life is, unless we decide to purposely end our own life, who knows how long we have to live? Being in my early eighties, i do not spend time wondering how long i have left on this earth to enjoy sailing. My lovely wife and I were out yesterday enjoying a few hours in a fresh breeze just south of the 49th. it was an exhilarating ride. Furthermore, we were one of only a very few sailboats out there. In fact, we only saw three others all afternoon. we covered a few miles of open water and returned to harbour in Point Roberts at sunset. What more can one ask for at our age?

Average age... Hum. Mine must be around 30 then. That's taking the mean of my emotional age, mental age and physical age. Alas, my physical age is 60, but going on 30.

I'm 37 and wife is 40. We have 6 and 8 yr old girls. Have been sailing (not live aboard yet) in the North East, Cape May to Cape Cod area, and outfitting our 1975 Tartan 41' for a planned year off to sail down to the Caribbean leaving June 2017. Wife is getting cold feet about leaving family behind and just nervous about the adventure.. I'm in 110% and have much time and emotion invested in the trip already. For me, the trip started 4 years ago when we bought a boat to go Blue water sailing... Time will tell if we actually cast off. I don't think the money is what keeps younger sailors on land. You can cruise pretty darn cheap.. I think the logistics and tenacity needed to leave it all behind is the main problem for most that never go, especially those with kids.

Money is an issue and we both need to work. For us it is a 'lifestyle choice' We love meeting people, not just other yachties but everyone, and we love getting lost on the barrier reef or up a big river or just about anywhere with a population density of exactly 2 per square mile. For us the motivations are equally about escape, adventure, and discovering how others live.

Hi Well i'll be 74 in a few days . Moved onboard this boat the day she was launched 31years ago Except for about 6 or 7 months total have been here the entire time !00,000 miles or so . I am in good health , Plans for Fiji this coming May . All I can say is 'Go do it ,no one promised anyone a tomorrow.'

My wife and I are both 73. I retired at 70 and took off the next week in the Baja Ha Ha. Now in Fiji and loving every minute. We do go home once a year for weddings or grandkid fixes, etc. I find cruisers of all ages. The retired group 60's and 70's, but also quite a few "kid boats" with crew from newborn on up, and everything in between.
By the way, it is a very healthy lifestyle. First thing I did was loose 60lbs.
