What I want from a man is humor in any situation. Especially in a crisis. Cannot abide grouchyness in a man any more than they can abide bitchyness in a woman.

Re: AT SEA, What do you want from your Woman or Man?

honestly?

although i cannot dismiss the importance of what has been discussed above...

what i would want from my mate is the capacity to work well together, to function well in a team, under pressure.

here's the scenario:

the tools have all been dragged out, and the boat is in an upside-down mess, and the mates are hard-pressed to find a solution (and David Bowie's voice nearly shatters the windows, with Under Pressure); and they are brainstorming, and suggestions are made, and solutions are attempted... and the mates are simply in tune, working together (as opposed to against one another)

these moments i'd relish.

and the best, the very best is that ah-ha moment when the problem gets solved, when the team finds that one thing that works to fix the problem, to solve the crisis.

it is in this moment (even if shared in friendship), that there is a special thing that happens when eyes meet. there is a certain look that doesn't really happen any other time (perhaps it is similar to that "look" involved just after a narrow escape, though its not quite the same...).

yes, this look is what i'd want from my mate

i wonder if "looks" like these are what actually keep folks fueling up on good coffee and sex

an equal partner, that's all, not necessarily in every capacity but equal. After all, if the boat goes down we both go. I've passed the stage of being the sole (dominant) sailor...oh..the arrogance of youth....here's to you Joseph Conrad!

Re: AT SEA, What do you want from your Woman or Man?

i have sailed with good and bad crew.
i prefer good crew--ie, those who are safety minded and responsible and interested in achieving the goal of arrival in good condition.
so far my best crew have been the cf members with whom i sailed out of san diego
and my simrad otto pile it.

Re: AT SEA, What do you want from your Woman or Man?

We have an agreement, my mate and I. I don't argue with her ashore; she doesn't argue with me afloat.
I provide the coffee, rum, and beer, she handles the rest of the galley; she can lay and steer a course, pick up a mooring under sail, and will usually pipe down if I ask.
What more can a skipper ask?

Re: AT SEA, What do you want from your Woman or Man?

My partner (now wife) and I have been cruising together since 2005. She came aboard a total novice and after all these years and sea miles, she is still pretty much a novice. Still, she suits my needs to a tee. She always stands her watches. Never complains, does almost all the cooking and most of the provisioning. I wash the dishes. She helps in the cockpit with sheets and sometimes steering. Sometimes she gets scared, but I never know it. I found out when someone asked her if she ever gets scared. In port, we share the same interests in exploration and getting familiar with different cultures. Its always been the just the two of us on a 45' monohull. With the right partner, life aboard is great.

Someone I can trust to wake me when he wants me above decks with him (for me, this is really important, and it is WANT, not NEED.
Someone with whom i do not need to censor my thoughts.
Someone who encourages me if I'm feeling low.
Someone to share the porpoises and birds with, and the sunrises at sea.
Someone to share the work and play with, and laugh together with:

My Jim.

Cleanliness--competence-courage--companionship--cleverness--capability--One could go on and on, and there are plenty more letters from which to choose--Ability, affability, accomplished, amiable--
