Any Recomendations on Composting toilets.

Air Head seems like the leading brand. Are there others and what is a reasonable price. Thanks

Check out C-Head? It's half the price, not sure if I'd purchase one.

I am doing the live aboard thing in about a year and want to make good decisions on reliability.

Our C- head has been flawless, as long as-
1- The boys sit to pee
2- We add a handfull of peat moss with every poop.
We wrote about it on our blog if you'd like to read it,

Re: Any Recomendations on Composting toilets.

Have had an AirHead since 2005 and it is still working fine. The lowest maintenance head I've ever had on a boat. The little computer fan that keeps air flowing through and out of the boat died after a year of use, but I believe it was because of taking green water down the vent in heavy weather. The replacement fan I bought at Radio Shack has been running continuously since 2007. There is a small spring that holds the trap door open that became too weak quickly, and I replaced with a small piece of shock cord. Other than that, just routine cleaning once in awhile. I keep a spray bottle of vinegar nearby that I use to clean the bowl daily when in use.

Have an airhead on our Hunter 30 and love it. You still have to deal with urine more frequently than I like but by far the best head option out there IMHO. We will be installing two on our new boat in the very near future.

Re: Any Recomendations on Composting toilets.

I copied this from another thread I posted on...I don't know a lot about boats, but I know my $h!t. :-)

Hope it helps..
mposting Toilet - Nature's Head
In my study of the 3 crapper units, I found the natures head to be the more sanitary to use and handle. Let me explain.

Chead....lift top, remove bucket containing crap and dump.
airhead and natures head...lift top off of unit and place somewhere (top can have poo on it) pick up the bottom base, dump and put back together.

chead seemed simpler and after owning one, I am glad I made the decision I made. Also, with chead, if your pee container overflows, it goes into the basin, but is seperated by a bucket from the poo... With airhead and natureshead, you overflow into the poo...much harder to clean up...also, airhead and chead have a trap door that can get poo on it. c head has no trap door as the urine collector part/thing has a better way of funneling into hte piss container.

Not telling anyone what to do, just why I concluded what I did. I looked at an analysed all 3 units. Even joined a yahoo group for chead and then came to my conclusion and ordered.

You could always take a regular toilet, plaster the drain, put a bag in and crap then store the doggie bags in the tank. (<<<<if you don't know what I'm talking about with that one, read some more threads about crappers on CF)

Not going to lie...sometimes I do it when in marina, but I don't tell anyone.....I t is awkward...sitting is best...some compromises are made, but I'm still glad I have the chead instead of the others and would take any com poster over the traditional....

Agreed, you won't get arrested if you sit in the street and pee:-)
