Annoyance from Pantaenius

On our 2nd year of insurance, i called for a minor coverage (few hundreds bucks) out of an illness to an (unpaid) crew member who, after two weeks of growing concerns, was finally hospitalized, undergoing a light, yet delicate, eye surgery.
All is well documented.

No, it wasn't a boom smashing, or a vicious sheet...but something (injury) which occurred on board!
It is not up to me to guess whether it was an illness, an affection, or trauma.., whether it developed because of non-nautical factors, or before embarking,... because, in the end, it affected my crew, my cruising, my relationship, all of which i feel responsible for.

Crew had to abandon ship and fly in urgency back home, 2000miles away.

The Insurer?

I was told Niet, as initially it looked to them as a paid- up crew (not applicable, but even if, SO WHAT!?)

Then the Claims dept. confirmed the non applicability of coverage, w/o explaining why...yet asking for another application form (why? Puzzled...)

I read it all. Major exclusions pertains chartering, regattas, vicious activities, relevant seas, troubled areas.
The contract even covers the crew when ashore for up to 48h! They say... Really?

Conclusions:

I wanted peace of mind for anyone onboard, no matter what!

I SEE PANTAENIUS IS NOT GIVING ME THIS.

...and wasting my time, too. Money (250eur/year, no more).

Now:
Can anyone suggest me any relevant/smooth alternative for Europe ?

Kind regards to all

You don't say what coverage you have.. just the single contract hull policy with inclusions or whether you opted.. like me.. for the additional and separate contract for skipper and crew covering health and injuries incurred which from my understanding has broader parameters.
Also.. is your question at the end after the rant.. a recommendation for other yacht insurers.

Re: Annoyance from Pantaenius

I have 3 insurances with them.

Third parts responsibilities
Accidents
Legal advice

I just didnt get the "corpi" insurance for self inflicted boat damages

No ranting, Annoyance, after 5-6 pointless e-mails and current concern at finding another better (no fuss) coverage :-)

What do you expect? It's an INSURANCE COMPANY !

They love to take your (or anybody's) money and NOT PAY OUT.

That's how they get those big shiny buildings.

SAFECO screwed me and my neighbor when yet another who had a big ugly boat and absolutely NO CLUE how to drive it damaged my boat AND my next door neighbor's dock. SAFECO not only didn't pay for the damages, but threatened both of us with prosecution if they could prove fraud on our part.
I wrote about it on CF when it happened.
GRR !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't knock them personally.. I've not yet had to claim on my Accident/Health policy.. however a couple of times in the past when I've had full hull cover on newer boats in the past.. lightening strike and hull damage they paid up quickly with no fuss following a visit by a surveyor they sent to the boat.

We tried to get coverage with Pantaneius but they denied it. No explanation, just flat denial. What kind of company operates like that? Got insurance twenty minutes later with Markel, who was very cooperative with a claim we had to make.

Re: Annoyance from Pantaenius

Its always a shame when a company turns in to a self-centered customer-UN-friendly automated machine not wanting to communicate with their customers.
I don't know why it is but absolutely the worst experiences I ever had with any type of companies were with insurance companies, to the point of outright theft by an agent.
Thanks for your posts guys, I will NOT be dealing with Pantaenius, or Safeco, or any other company behaving like that. Thanks again for the valuable information.
