Most of the folks I've met take there dogs with them where ever they go or one person stays with the dog while the other does the supply shopping
Something to think about before you bring a dog aboard

Yea for sure. We take our dog to a lot of places with us but what do they do when they work?

Never met a sailor in Florida except for a pilot that lives aboard that works and he takes his dog with him

That's an idea. We aren't in Florida yet right now we are in Virginia. We won't be there for at least another 2-2 1/2 years. Husband is in the navy so we have to wait.

Re: Animals living aboard

How do you travel abroad with a cat and various country health and import issues?

That's a good question and truthfully I don't really know but I've read that your fine to travel with them as long as they are up to date with their records but I'm sure there additional things that need to be done depending on where your going.

When you travel abroad with pets you need a current letter from a vet attesting to it's health.

Most places simply require a vet certificate from your last port indicating the pet is healthy and has had a rabies shot within one year (sometimes one month). Noonsite has a wealth of information and it's always prudent to check with a country directly before you depart your current port.

Re: Animals living aboard

go to veterinarian before departure for a veterinarian certificate for international travel.
keep the shots current and visit international veterinarians as needed.
no problem if you pay attention to the needs of the places you enter.

I haven't read the entire thread, but I thought I would add to the info. We are traveling with two cats in the Caribbean. Most of the islands require a current rabies Titer report, the Titer is good for a year. They all require a current health certificate, good for 10 day to two weeks depending on the island issuing and current vaccination records. Now having said all that, the only place that cared was the BVIs. We declared the cats at every island after the BVIs and no one really seemed to care to see their records once we confirmed they did not leave the boat. I hope this was helpful. Robyn

Re: Animals living aboard

Shelly, dog, live with us for 10+ years, she was a great live a board boat dog as she did not bark and/or jump off the boat. When we both worked we left her on the boat. Year around we kept her inside with one of the pilot house door open enough for her, so she could get out on the deck. As long as we did not fly we took her with us, and when we fly had one of the other live aboard take care of her. She was very friendly/loving dog so others in the marina would let her out and take her for walks. We always left on the of the pilot house door slightly open/un locked. Get to know the other live a boards as they will become your support and go to.

16 years we been a live aboard and have never locked the boat, I thnk dirt pople are overly paranoid/worried about break/theift. We don't lock our vehicle eiather.
