Anchor's Aweigh!
OK -the countdown is now in its final stages.
we've sold the house
we've sold the furniture
we've sold everything else we can sell
we've rented a small storage cell for the personal items
we've got the boat on the hard and are busy installing and repairing and god knows what else (sigh)
we've set the date - May 29 at noon we sail away into the sunset
geeze - this is a lot harder than I thought. will we make it and have everything done by may 29? not a chance - like everyone else, we'll be installing all the "nice to haves" along the way (another sigh)
But DAMN! - we'll be cruising and living aboard full time and seeing the world - what can be better than that?????
And unbelievably almost 100 persons have announced their intention to come and wave good-bye - truly touching (shucks I'm about to begin to cry)

How about waving to all the poor suckers that are stuck on land and can't go. Screw crying, that's worth laughing about. You are going to do what most of us may end up only dreaming about and never accomplishing......wait i'm one of those poor suckers right now
Congratulations though. I am beyond envious. Happy sailing!

Ha Ha Ha yep - but it is one of the good kind - we have to be out of our hosue by June1 and the 29 of may is a sunday wo we're sailing then
the good news is that once we lift the anchor we have no schedules until november when we cross the atlantic from the canaries and after that no schedules at all

Re: Anchor's Aweigh!
Way to go, CArsten! I can still remember how excited/scared/euphoric/apprehensive/glad/sad/ etc we were back in 1986 when we left SF and headed south.
It's a hard road, and worth every damn trauma that you have suffered to get there.
Good luck, fair winds, and have as much fun as you can stand!

Re: Anchor's Aweigh!
Carsten, congratulations and bon voyage .
I doubt there will be tears on departure day. You will both be bouncing out of your skins with excitement (and just very relieved to be escaping the mob ).
Hope our paths cross, there is simply no better way of catching up with friends than when an anchorage is shared.
Love from SWL xxx
Ithaka
As you set out for Ithaka
hope your road is a long one,
full of adventure, full of discovery.
Laistrygonians, Cyclops,
angry Poseidon—don’t be afraid of them:
you’ll never find things like that on your way
as long as you keep your thoughts raised high,
as long as a rare excitement
stirs your spirit and your body.
Laistrygonians, Cyclops,
wild Poseidon—you won’t encounter them
unless you bring them along inside your soul,
unless your soul sets them up in front of you.
Hope your road is a long one.
May there be many summer mornings when,
with what pleasure, what joy,
you enter harbors you’re seeing for the first time;
may you stop at Phoenician trading stations
to buy fine things,
mother of pearl and coral, amber and ebony,
sensual perfume of every kind—
as many sensual perfumes as you can;
and may you visit many Egyptian cities
to learn and go on learning from their scholars.
Keep Ithaka always in your mind.
Arriving there is what you’re destined for.
But don’t hurry the journey at all.
Better if it lasts for years,
so you’re old by the time you reach the island,
wealthy with all you’ve gained on the way,
not expecting Ithaka to make you rich.
Ithaka gave you the marvelous journey.
Without her you wouldn't have set out.
She has nothing left to give you now.
And if you find her poor, Ithaka won’t have fooled you.
Wise as you will have become, so full of experience,
you’ll have understood by then what these Ithakas mean.

Re: Anchor's Aweigh!
The last few weeks are hectic, but it's well worth it. When you get to that first anchorage and drop anchor, cruising really starts then.

Absolutely NOTHING is better than cruising, living aboard, and looking forward to your next passage and adventure. I wish you well, and hope you enjoy..

Re: Anchor's Aweigh!
Congrats Carsten, We've begun the process but are still about a year out. I can only imagine how you must be feeling, but it sounds like you've already done most of the hard stuff.
The process of selling everything has begun for us and it's a bit terrifying and of course exciting. Good luck with the move and take lots of pictures and please share as much as you can.
Fair winds!

Re: Anchor's Aweigh!
Big congratulations Carsten! You are in such exciting times. For us the transition to living aboard and cruising was a whirlwind of working and spending and anticipating the unknown that was nearly overwhelming. It made us giddy and exhausted with excited energy.
Since you have a non voyage party scheduled I suggest you avoid the trap of feeling you must shove off and leave with everyone watching. Tell people you are planing to leave a day or so later after you've finished a few tasks. Or, if you must for show, cast off to end the party and sail for an hour then return to your slip and get some sleep. Then leave quietly when you are ready.
