Re: All is Lost

I believe the title is technically accurate " all is lost" I believe it is referring to your time that the movie just stole from you. Or maybe it was the $24 I payed a few months ago to see it when it first came out.

Re: All is Lost

I think people are missing the point of the film. One of my favourite TV shows is from late 90's called Dream Team. Its about a fictional football (soccer) team based near Birmingham, UK. The story lines made it something I made time to watch every week, the acting was as wooden as the set!

This film has a few inaccuracies but the point of it is to make you think about what would happen if you was in that situation yourself.

And what movie is realistic, anyway? Transformers?
"The Hunt for Red October" was very realistic. So much so that Tom Clancy got hauled in front of Congress to find out how he knew details of sub ops and the nuances of orders given while underway.

But that's definitely one of the few exceptions to the rule.

Re: All is Lost

I thought it was a pretty good flick even with the "errors". Much rather have Hollywood making movies like this than another Die Hard, comic book hero, or Ben Stiller comedy.

Re: All is Lost

My wife and I consider it an educational video. You know those ones where the guy does everything wrong to prove a point...boat is sinking so you have a shave? Really? More like, don't be like Jack and take a shave when you're sinking, get off the damn boat. Or, rip a big hole in the starboard side, don't be like Jack and stay on a Port tack and fill the cabin with water.
Great fun. Good flick if you just realize you are supposed to do the exact opposite of what he does.

But it did bring up thoughts of " WTF would I do" with a lot of viewers.

Most pleasure boaters have no clue about damage control.

80% of them will still "may day" in a situation where they could get the boat in safely with a little knowledge of how to use simple items like cushions, lines and cloth to control water intrusion.

This is so stupid. Why did he bring the radio on deck? Sometimes he's sailing sometimes he isn't? Why does he ram the shipping container? Why does he tack onto port and then get more water in the boat?

Re: All is Lost

I haven't taken the time to watch the movie and doubt if I ever will, but the movie would be a success with one edit. And that would be having a final scene where Redford is drowning and a tiger paw(from the life of pi) reaches out to him.

Stuck in nj at a marina with wifi. I thought people had said it was a good movie. I just can't believe how awful it was.

Re: All is Lost

The worst movie I have ever seen.
He mishandles the sextant, keeping all the shades down. You can't see anything! And the whole BS about plotting his latitude without knowing the Declination.... C'mon, did this movie have a single advisor who has been to sea????

Re: All is Lost

Watching All Is Lost with a sailor is like watching ER with a nurse.

Sitting next to my ex wife (a nurse) watching ER:
"That drips not running"
"That's not how you prep for a tracheotomy"
etc etc

Sitting with a sailor watching All is Lost
"Turn on the bilge pump!!"
etc etc
