Re: Air Conditioning

Nice! I have shore-power A/C on my Jeanneau SO409. I don't have a generator so no A/C outside of the marina. But yes... no matter whether in the marina or in the middle of nowhere... AC is NICE!!!

Would I be able to run a 12000 BTU or 16000 BTU air con off of a Honda 2000 or 2200?

Thanks!

YES!!! In FL I love my air conditioning. In a marina you can't live (or can't live in any kind of comfort) without it. At anchor, maybe most of the time but there are those nights when the wind is dead and the bugs attack that I would kill for my air conditioning.

Re: Air Conditioning

It's even nicer out on a $10.50/day mooring running the generator that uses $1/hr diesel

I have a 16k BTU air conditioner and a Honda EU2000 and it would NOT start the air con, even running through a 2000W Victron inverter with boost feature (will automatically kick in the inverter when it senses a load that the main power source can't handle).

Just installed a Supco hard start capacitor and plan to test it again this weekend to see if that solves the startup problem.

Another possible solution is the Easy Start which claims to signficantly reduce the startup load and improve run effciency as well. But the Easy Start is about $300 and a capacitor was $16.

Re: Air Conditioning

The Supco may be a waste of time, mine was. The Webasto hits hard, stupid hard.
The easy start is about the only way. My Nexgen will handle both the 16K and the 6K with enough left over to charge batteries etc.
The Honda will handle the 6 K, even if it could start the 16K, it’s 12 amp draw would have the little Honda working hard (loud).

So far as long as I anchor not in the protected mooring fields, I don’t need AC, not yet anyway, but it’s warming up.
Went over to Black Sound yesterday, it’s inside of a pretty tight bay, wall to wall mooring balls, full of boats, one small entrance.
I figure it’s actually almost an open sewer, has to be.

How much time or how much money?

I certainly agree the Webasto is a HARD start. I figure with a Honda 2000 and a 2000 W Victron inverter I could put out at least 40-45 amps for a short term surge. The Webasto 16 has a LRA rating of 60 amps and it must pull every bit of that on startup because the Honda/Victron combo didn't come close to starting the air con.

Webasto tech support strongly recommended a hard start cap so I figured for under $20 what have I got to lose. It definitely helped. Haven't tested it with the Honda but my current marina seems to have low voltage at the dock and the air con had a lot of trouble starting. Even when the Victron added its 2kW boost it only started about 15-20% of the time. With the Supco cap it starts first time, every time and the Victron never kicks in.

Got my fingers crossed that this will be enough for the Honda as well.

Details. We need details!

Dollar wise with new AP, plotter, radar, air con, storage and trucking, crane for mast, gas commuting back and forth, a few new tools, trip to the Bahamas and back (including the $300 cruising fee), some of this, that and the other not quite $20k.

So yea, all things considered, what's another $300 here and there. On the other hand, $300 here, $1000 there and pretty soon you're talking about real money.

Re: Air Conditioning

I love air conditioning! Makes life worth living in South Florida during the summer.

Possum had a very small cabin so I installed a 5000 btu air conditioner. The air conditioner took 500 watts to run. The pump took another 100 watts. I figured that a Honda 1000 should be plenty. Boy was I wrong. The starting load was over 3000 watts! Even the Honda 2000 wouldn’t start it.

I put a Supco capacitor on it and the little Honda 1000 could start and run it with no problem.

That's encouraging. Maybe I'll be able to start my 16kBTU with a Honda plus the inverter.
