Our children left the boat for houses ashore when they became adults, but we have kept a philodendron aboard for the last 26 years.

Something that will make a difference is whether you just liveaboard or choose to be an active member of the community outside, or the cruising community. If you cruise outside the US, your kids will be exposed to other cultures, which is as the old books promise, broadening.
