Youngest full-time cruisers?
My wife and I are about a year away from tossing the lines and never looking back. She is under the impression that we (specifically she) will be the youngest people out there. I've come across blogs of other 30somethings and younger, but so far, she does seem to be the youngest. I'm 30 and she is 23.
So it begs the question, what the youngest (besides boat kids ) full-time cruiser that you have come across?

Re: Youngest full-time cruisers?
mid 20's, in a 19 ft. sailboat, a long time ago, but were out for as long as the money held out, and about a third of the way into a circumnavigation. Friends circumnavigated on a 27 ft. sailboat, and it only electronics was the depth sounder. They worked along the way, job possibilities turned up.
Go for it. Sensibly.

Well we're finishing up a 3 year refit/rebuild in the Ottawa Valley.
The boat is on the family farm a few hours away from the water, so we'll be trucking to Rock Hall, MD to launch (8hrs)
Plan to shake down cruise in the Chesapeake and work our way down the ICW and hit up Bahamas for the winter.
Then who knows after that?

Re: Youngest full-time cruisers?
I would have to say Laura Dekker is the youngest full time cruiser I know. Started at 14, just turned 18 and still cruising.

Re: Youngest full-time cruisers?
We did it at 28 and 24, and we were not always the youngest cruisers in the anchorages. Saw a 24 foot converted steel lifeboat go through Tahiti with a couple that must have been in their very early 20s,plus a newborn. Of course they were French. A young couple came through the Marquesas in a San Juan 24. It can certainly be done, but it is hard for young people to have enough money to cruise for any length of time. That is why most young cruisers are in the smaller boats. It is better to do it and end up broke, than to not do it at all. Just my 2 cents worth. _____Grant.____Oh yes, the only electronics were a depth sounder that took a door bell battery, and a hand held RDF that took 4 D cells. The RDF helped to supplament the celestial while going through the Tuamotus. Have a Good Time.

So what's your plan? What direction are you headed? What kind of boat are you rock'in?

We live in St Thomas and are in the buying stage. Leaning to a Hunter Passage 42 or similar. We'll be putsing around the Carib for a year or so after living aboard here in STT for a year or so, getting the feel and experience keeping STT as the base. We suspect we'll be doing the Panama Canal in 2-3 years and from there a slow circumnavigation, 5 or so years.
We have a daughter who's coming up on 2 and we want to be old enough to not only remember most of the circumnavigation but to use it as a valuable learning experience. So if we hit the Panama Canal when she's 4-5, she'll be old enough to start forming real memories.
The benefit for shopping down here is that there are plenty of fully outfitted cruisers that people have given up on for one reason or another by the time they get down here and need to unload cheap.

Re: Youngest full-time cruisers?
We are 27 and are younger than most. I don't think you won't feel young as a cruiser until you are well off in your 60's
