If you enjoy historic sites, then check out the State Park exhibits at Fort Macon, which is situationed just off Beaufort inlet. Beyond the Civil War elements, this park highlights the activities of WWII U Boats just off the NC coastline. A considerable portion of the fort tour is within the earth fortification, so you'll be out of the wind chill. If the temp gets above 45 degrees, a day trip to Lookout Bight is worth the while. Both Carrot Island and Schackleford Banks have wild ponies, so keep an eye out for them when you anchor in Taylors Creek. You'll find a mixture of locals and wanderlust travelers in the Pubs.... enjoy the conversations.
