We have found many very drinkable Chilean wines in the $3.50 to $4.00 range. Our cheap boat red is a Carmen Classic Merlot at $3.65. Our cheap white is 2010 Santa Rita 120 at $3.75. Thanks for the ideas. I hope these fine wines can be found outside Chile. We live in Hong Kong and the selection is somewhat limited. Most wine stores only have a tiny section on New World Wines and what they have tastes like it got boiled inside the top-most 40 foot container on the way over here.

Just another good reason to go to Chile, I guess!

Very interesting journey and blog. I'm interested in the same route you propose to S. Africa. What route did you follow from Vancouver to Puerto Montt? Surely you didn't motor down the whole coast of S. America into the Humboldt. Thanks, Jon
