The Med and Then a Circumnavigation

There is another thread about someone wanting to circumnavigate going East, starting with the Mediterranean and then through the Suez. I though I'd start a new one rather than hijack it.
I would also like to go to the Med from the US. Ultimately a circumnavigation would be the goal, but I would want to avoid the Suez unless things change a lot. My thought would be to go Bermuda - Azores - into Gibralter and spend time in the Med and then take the ARC to the Carribbean and go west around the world via Panama. Instead of having to go up the West coast of Africa to visit the mediterranean we could head back to the US from South Africa,

Would that make sense as a plan?
