The Bum(fuzzle)s Are Moving Afloat Again !

This may be posted elsewhere....and I know there's lots of opinions pro and con for this couple/family. But, I enjoy their blog. They've just thrown off the docklines for the first time in ages.

It's going to be interesting to see how the family enjoys the side-ways leaning world they're entering for the first time!

Re: The Bum(fuzzle)s Are Moving Afloat Again !

You're correct, Karen, but to be accurate, they're moving down from Rio Vista in the California delta to the Bay itself. They're not heading down to Mexico until they complete their refit, which is not insignificant. Here's how Pat put it in their blog:

"The real boat work begins in earnest once we hit the Bay. Autopilot, lifelines, rigging, sails, companionway hatch, communications, refrigeration, ground tackle, and on and on and on."

It could be quite a lengthy period of time before they're able to head out the Gate and make that left turn.

I'm a on facebook message board where they post pretty frequently. There's definitely less animosity on there since everyone more-or-less knows each other and the connections are a bit more personal.

It's a pilothouse, but does anyone know what kind?

There's definitely less animosity on here, as well, Eric, because the Rules against personal attacks are strictly enforced . . . perhaps not always the case those many years ago when Pat and Ali were regularly raked over the coals by some of the members.

Thanks!

....a bit bothered though they seem to like the monohull more than the catamaran.
I'll get over it though.

Now people only get raked over the coals if they get kidnapped by pirates
or lose their boat and die.

That's more a reflection of their wanting to raise the baby in a roomy but cozy vessel that possesses real ambiance. The Wildcat was fine for its intended use when they were just starting out and didn't have anything to compare it to . . . and it actually took them around the world. But for the builder's incompetence, which cost them a lot (financially), it was the perfect vessel for them at that time.

Who knows, they may own another catamaran one day - but for now, the Spindrift is the right vessel for their intended use under their present circumstances (starting a family).

Re: The Bum(fuzzle)s Are Moving Afloat Again !

It is interesting to see the way that they compare the cat to the Mono. Pat even wrote that it will be months until they quit comparing. I think it shows perfectly that different boats serve different purposes. They want a large salon with lots of floor space to play on, they buy a large double ended mono.

Re: The Bum(fuzzle)s Are Moving Afloat Again !

Always liked the Bumfuzzles, especially when they started jerking all the complainers chain..
All they did was buy a boat and have an enjoyable RTW at their own pace. Cruising at the pace they were comfortable with, not the pace other cruisers thought they should sail at.
I especially enjoyed the ranting about the MOB pole that they painted gray, never understood what the big deal about that. At 50' with the sun behind the pole, it's going to look black anyway. I;m going to be looking for the flag, strobe instead of a skinny pencil thin pole.
Just my opinion.

Re: The Bum(fuzzle)s Are Moving Afloat Again !

I too have been reading with interest on their thoughts regarding their first non-catamaran. So far they seem pleased, but have not really gotten out there in the ocean yet. I have many questions for them, but for some reason my computer won't seem to let me "contact" them.

Re: The Bum(fuzzle)s Are Moving Afloat Again !

Clearly the Bumfuzzles haven't read CF in recent times. It's a known fact that folk don't buy a Mono after a Multihull. At least it was until I put that section of CF (no names ) on ignore.

I guess they are just going to have to keep sailing around the world until they learn better..........

.......and until then will have to settle on only having fun

Re: The Bum(fuzzle)s Are Moving Afloat Again !

I love these guys blog. I've been reading it for as long as I've been on the CF. The main thing that attracted me to their blog was all the naysayers initial attacks against them. I think they're awesome and can't wait to see their new adventures with Ouesterly and the new little one. It should be an amazing adventure.
