Re: The Bum(fuzzle)s Are Moving Afloat Again !

I understand what Atoll is saying ..Its like having a secret surf spot and then you want to share it and then that person wants to share it and then when you come back years later there is some upstart dropping in on "your" wave...we all want a little secret surf spot and for others to respect that(of course they dont)...I still dont know what a Bumfuzzel is!DVC

But we can solve this problem for "them", right here on this sailing site! I know we can...

It would seem that there really aren't that many of them if the bar is higher than that. In fact, all of us should stop posting/sailing if we haven't met Atolls graduation standard.

I am sure you are a great guy, but this thread isn't your best work. You seem bitter and judgmental without a good reason. Why not just help people out and be positive. If you don't have something nice to say then don't say anything at all...
shucks im touched
,all i've ever done is help people out
,when some one asks how much?

normally im shocked that they are rude enough to think that i would charge for helping someone out of a difficult situation
,this is how yachting has changed in my lifetime
,perhaps humanity as well.

must be part of that material dream ,that every thing has a price........

I think you've hit the nail on the head!

And going back to the original post, I wish the Bums good winds and happy sailing. I think they've earned a good deal of respect. They've done something few of us will manage. And I hope some of us will.

I was kind of hoping they could solve it for us. I'd settle for a few San Migs and a BBQ.

But they taste so good!

I exploit weeds on a huge scale! I'm a homebrewer, my basement is like the depths of hell for malted barley!

Thanks! Much needed getaway!

Re: The Bum(fuzzle)s Are Moving Afloat Again !

From the book-

My business was cutthroat. In addition to being my friends, the guys I stood shoulder to shoulder with every day were also my competitors. I was in the trading pits for four hours a day with one thing in my mind, and that was taking everybodys money from them. Because of that I didnt think sharing the news that I was leaving to go sail around the world would be met with a party and a cake. Instead they'd try to screw me over on every trade I made.
On my last day, a Friday, I walked into the pits and told a couple of friends that I wouldn't be there on Monday. I was done, and Ali and I were going sailing. Nobody really believed, but the talk soon circulated around the pits, and before long everybody knew. The trading floor really is a different world compared to an office job. Here the news was met almost universally by whispering behind my back, most trying to determine how much money I had really made on such and such a trade, and others predicting my demise at sea. There were no pats on the back or high fives.

I think Pat is a product of this environment, and while I applaud him for seeing that it was something he needed to escape and doing so, I also think he still carries a lot of that attitude around with him. At least that is the opinion I formed from reading the book. With friends like these, etc. etc. This is why I don't respect traders and their ilk, the mercenary cutthroat attitude toward business. It's bringing the world down. Yet he still trades for a living, just not from the pits...

Oh, I see...my bad...then $3/day and 6 tins. I'd say that's a fair rate for a delivery skipper and nautical engineer in your position.

Exactly!

Pat let's it hang out, warts and all.

How many of YOU who cast dispersions admit to your mistakes, and sometimes multiple ones, on a daily basis for the world to analyse?

Each one of us could find something we thing we would have done differently, but I bet if you had a similar blog, we could dissect and discuss your perceived mistakes.
