Re: The Bum(fuzzle)s Are Moving Afloat Again !

Seriously?
This thread has devolved into a debate about how he made his money?
This is pathetic.

I used to make twice as much fixing cars as a new engineer with a master's degree could make around here. SO WHAT?
They are not rich. I doubt that they even have enough money to afford a nice house in a nice neighborhood. Their boat was 50something thousand. Oh, real high rollers.

I admit I'm envious and wish I could be doing the same with my family, unfortunately for me I won't be able to do it until about 25 more years. But I'm not going to hate on someone because they're doing what I wish I could. I say go Bums! You amaze me.
highly unlikely there will be any affordable cruising in 25 years time, unless you are blue collar............

I am much more concerned about a line from one of Pat's recent blog postings: "But one thing a massive full keel like this does do is instill in you a sense that this is a real cruising boat, not some little plastic toy like our catamaran." (Bolding is mine.) I hope that this isn't the first dangerous step on the path to them becoming "real cruisers" -- something they have heretofore disdained to the delight of many.

I couldn't agree more. The folks on here who are criticizing Pat probably don't have the slightest idea of what a financial trade looks like, what is involved and who is doing the work. It is sad that anyone would be bitter about someone else trying to live the dream. They are not rich. People be happy for them.

Re: The Bum(fuzzle)s Are Moving Afloat Again !

They just updated their site. They're on the move again. I'm amazed that Pat and Ali meet the day to day demands of rearing 2 tots and breakage of gear while sailing. Most people would have quit and swallowed the anchor after their first child was born.

Heh-heh. I saw that too. A brand new fork in the Bumfuzzle debate!

Ah, but not so fast mono fans! This was posted just previous to the above:

More than once today Ali said, “I miss our cat.” True, the cat would have handled today’s conditions much much better. Big following seas just don’t work on a mono the way they do on a cat. We would have been loving life today on the cat.

So in about 24 hours we have:
- Full keel is a real cruising boat.
- Cat vs mono musings.

The only thing he really, really needs to touch on in his next post is what sort of anchor they're using and how they feel about it. He did have a really cool lowf-stop picture of their anchor chain going into the water, but I couldn't see what was on the end of it.

Does anybody know what anchor this family is using? You know, their very lives depend on it. I sure hope they're going to be ok!

Re: The Bum(fuzzle)s Are Moving Afloat Again !

I think they are great, their way might not be the route I would choose, but to each their own. I must say I was a little shocked at his comment about seeing how big his boat was under water, he seemed a little stunned by it's enormity after owning it for so long.

Anyways some people have money, some have skills, and some have sense, but not everyone leaves the dock. So good on them for getting out there and sailing. I have a feeling they should spend a little more time buffing up their skills and sense now that they have two kids to take care of.
