I've been doing much more research and know exactly what I'm getting into. Thanks.

The general rule is if you have a spare on the boat, then that will not be the thing to break. Good set of tools.
Not trying to be negative, but It always befuddles me when people want to provision like they are preparing for a nuclear holocaust. People eat all over the planet. For me, trying local food and shopping at local markets is part of the appeal of cruising/travelling. It also provides another channel for interacting with locals and getting to know the local culture. When traveling by boat, you don't typically get treated like just another tourist. I've been amazed how quickly people will open up to explain their foods and even invite you, a total stranger they've known for just a few minutes, into their homes for meals. I've had some great experiences this way. Over provisioning I think serves to isolate you from these opportunities.

We also like to eat fresh, real food (not preprocessed/packaged food "products")...pulling yet another can of beans out of the bildge...no thanks (unless of course that's the only option offshore).

Stock up on tools, spares, and knowledge...then go immerse yourself in some local markets when you make landfall.

UV resistant thread is a good item to have aboard...hard to find in many places.

Re tools: get to know your boat. Every boat is different and having a good selection of tools specialised to your boat sure makes life easier. Case in point: just removed one of my starters for the first time...discovered I need to add about a 2' 1/4 drive extension to my toolbox...what a screaming bitch it was without it!

We take larger quantities of staples like flour, and wasabi powder (important stuff!), and vaccum bag them in smaller quantities. Dry goods go bad fast in the tropics once opened. The vaccum bags tend to be tougher and seal better than ziplocks.

We vaccum bag spices and such too when we plan to be away from the boat for a while.

Hey - just try to get gin and tonic where we are! If we didn't stock those in nuclear holocaust quantities, we would run out and need to rely on friends heading our way….

Well, stocking up on "essentials" is important. We left Guatemala a few years ago with a case of Ron Botran 12 year and a few bottles of Zacapa Centenario. Good rum is important...and try as I might I just can't get to like Panama's Abuelo. I want to buy one of their premium aged rums and see if I can stomach it, but for about the same price point I can buy Ron Botran premium rums here which are delicious so I haven't yet. Have also run across the ocassional bottle of Venezula's Pompero...yum...on par with Zacapa Centenario.

Speaking of nuclear essentials...how's the Maria Sharps supply holding out?

We plan to be heading your way by mid Feb if you need any "essentials". ;-)

can not tell from you profile if you even own a boat yet? if you don't you might try getting a boat first and do a bit of sailing and see how that goes.
and stp reading all the glossy mags on how easy this lifestyle is.

if you have a boat take it on a 3-5 month cruise through the bahamas and figure out what your boat needs.

We are down to 1.5 bottles. I drink the stuff. Going to be a bad day when that runs out.

I was in Belize back on November and could have picked up a case for you, but didn't think of it. Don't recall seeing it anywhere in Panama.

What does that mean? You finally filled a pack with a buck knife, waterproof matches, an LLBean cookstove, sleeping bag, and tent, and went camping for a weekend? Splendid. That's an excellent first step to get y'alls feet wet.

Still want to circumnavigate the planet?

Supplies list for circumnavigating

All of these responses seem to think I'm some ditsy girl going half assed Into this. I'm not trying to leave tomorrow. My leaving date has changed to like 2019. I've grown up boating, know how to rebuild an engine and am leaning the ropes of mechanics and other things on board from a very experienced mechanic. I know how to sail thanks and now know to never ask for advice on here again. Asking a question doesn't mean I don't know anything. Just trying to get others opinions and just get ******** in reply.

What part of replies #5 & #18, too, was insulting?

Really do hope you make it back here, most folks are more than willing to help.
