San Diego to Mexico in February ?

Our departure date keeps moving foreword and now it is looking like the truck won't make it to San Diego until the last week of January. Weather willing we will leave a day or two after delivery there to head Southbound. Our thought was to spend some time in the Sea of Cortez before heading on to Panama and the canal, but with the sailing window getting smaller and smaller I guess things could change a bit. Is mid-April too late to head South from the Sea? How tough is the run from Z town to Panama? Also, does anyone recommend a yard for delivery in San Diego?
