Saint Augustine Florida Anchorages

Tomorrow I'll be heading down to Saint Augustine FL for a few weeks before continuing south. It's been a while since I've been there and I've heard that there is no anchoring now by the Fort because they've installed moring balls. Are there any places to anchor out and places to dingy in? Thanks for the help.

Re: Saint Augustine Florida Anchorages

I was just there a few days ago hangin' on a ball. There are places to anchor around both mooring fields, just watch your depths. No good place to land a dinghy around the marina or fort. If you land at the marina they'll charge you for the dink. With the crazy tides there, it's just as easy to grab a ball for 20 bucks. Then you get to use the dink dock and the showers. Or you can be picked up for free on the marina water taxi. You may be able to land a dink on the east side of the Bridge of Lions and walk across the bridge into St. Augustine, just not sure....

Thanks. I guess I'll just catch a mooring ball. I forgot about the tides and currents there. May be better off.

Yep, I think so too. When wind opposes tide there it gets real interesting...

Re: Saint Augustine Florida Anchorages

Also in St Augustine mooring field. Leaving this morning. Good deal. The $22 includes free pump outs and a launch. There is plenty of room to anchor but the currents here make the $22 mooring balls attractive. The only place it seems possible to dinghy assure is the municipal marina, other places have done a pretty good job of fencing access off.

Apparently three boats broke loose from the north and drifted into the bridge during the last blow. A houseboat lost it's pilot house and a sailboat with a family of five living on it sunk. The mini golf attendant told me the story so it was unclear whether they were anchored or on balls.

Thanks everyone for the info. Stopped in Georgetown for some fuel, but looking at the marine forecast not sure if I want to head out again. Forecast off Savannah looks ugly for tomorrow. May end up taking ICW for a few days.

One more tidbit, some dirty dog slipped on board our boat while we were on the ball at St Augustine and nicked our binoculars and my favorite pair of thongs ("flip flops"). Lock it or lose it.
