Sailing North Against the Brazilian Current

Hi to all the experienced and well travelled sailors out there.
We are leaving Cape Town on our first transatlantic crossing, at the 'wrong time of the year' (July/Aug) and really want to visit Ilha de Grande just south of Rio de Janeiro. This would mean arriving there in September.
Our dilemma is how we get up to the Caribbean against the current and wind off the Brazilian coast since we hear some people struggle to even get past Cabo Frio in November.
We hear so many conflicting stories and thought to ask the forum members who have first hand experience of this, wether it is viable and what strategy is best to achieve this?

Re: Sailing against the Brazilian current northwards to the carribean from ilha de Gr

Suggest you send Lynn Pardey an email (www.landlpardey.com), some years ago she wrote an excellent article on how to handle this trek.
As I recall it was based on heading more or less eastward on port tack into the Sth Atlantic high untill the wind went far enough eastwards to be able to tack to starboard and then have the wind gradually veer to beam on.
If you are coming this far to Brasil, why in such a hurry to leave?
Good luck

Thanks for the info - yeah perhaps we should hang around a bit longer. Our plans were to get up through the Carribean, on toward San Blas, Panama Canal and out into the Pacific.
We thought we should buy some time during hurricane season in Carribean to check out Brazil. Most are advising we should hang out at Forteleza but I have always been keen to check out Ilha de Grande and the many islands.
What time would you recommend one spend in Brazil?

Re: Sailing North Against the Brazilian Current

I would certainly plan on several months in the Costa Verde region, between Santos and Rio de Janeiro (which includes Ilha Grande), more than 300 islands, see the old town of Paraty. Not alot of wind during the summer but wonderful cruising.
You can pick up an English cruising guide from the following link
Rapunzel - Publicaes
don't forget Carnival in February (and not just Rio, the locals believe it is is best in Salvador BA) one great party.
You can see one couples experience cruising the coast on
DOMINO 20
look in their 2009 & 2010 blogs. Noonsite also has some useful info on Brasil.
Brazilian customs rules allow a yacht to remain in the country for up to 2 years, but visitors can only remain for 180 days in any 12 month period, whilst out of the country you effectively leave the yacht in bond at a ceretified marina.
If you would like more info send me a PM

This has now caused serious debate in the household.
I think we need to re-look the whole situation. Ana and I have moved onto our boat and it is home, so no chance of leaving the boat there while we move on - perhaps we could get in some extra time from the authorities since Ana is exceptionally well qualified at teaching English in foreign countries, and has done so successfully in China and other countries too. She even teaches English teachers to teach English in foreign countries, so she could possibly look into that option.
Non the less, we could look into a 180 day stay but will need to plan our exit path to other cruising areas then considering hurrican seasons etc.
Would you know what the best time to move north up the coast would be?

I second the opinion that you spend some time in Brazil. If you need to leave for visa reasons you can go to Uruguay/Argentina/Paraguay, there are reasonable flights, and even bus trips available.
