Sailing Inside Passage to Alaska

I've heard that most sailors end up motoring 80 percent or more on the inside passage. I don't think I want to go if that is the case. Is there anyone out there who has had experience sailing to Alaska and motoring 50 percent or less?? Could a person even do it in a motorless sailboat? Thanks
