New York to the Med

Hi Everyone
This is my first post. I apologise in advance if I don't follow all the road rules.
I have a Catalina 42, 2004 with a winged keel & currently in Charleston, SC.
I am planning on sailing up to New York & then onto the Med via the Azores.
I need lots of info about lots of things, so here goes.
I plan to sail NY harbour, go through the East River to Long Island Sound, onto Newport, Rhode Island, then Martha's Vineyard & Nantucket Islands before heading to the Azores.
I would love to hear from anyone with experience in sailing this coastal area including great places to stop off, who does the best charts & what I need to look out for. I have a Raymarine SL 70 Chartplotter that takes Jepperson chips. These chips aren't cheap & I am considering an iPad with iNavX.
Then comes the long haul to the Azores which Jimmy Cornell suggest is best done from May to late July. I was considering mid June. Once again, anything & ever bit of info I can get from those who have done it would help tremendously.
How much traffic after Nantucket is there & do the freighters coming west travel the same rhumb live as I would likely heading to the Azores.

For your NY harbor leg, look into Liberty Landing Marina.
Great facility, perfect location and the opportunity to hit the city for a night out.

There must be cheaper marinas than this one.

We found cargo traffic on our way to the Azores mad. But we sailed the southerly route from the West Indies.

Make sure your crew understand how a cargo ship sails and how not to get run down.

Hi there, thanks for that. So there was plenty of traffic on the rhumb line of around 39 degrees north going both east to west & west to east? Constant watch is a necessity I know, every 20 minutes, it doesn't take long & you're a sad, careless statistic.

Why go to Newport? New York, Bermuda, Horta, Algarve, Gibraltar. Take a peek at Jimmy Cornel's World Cruising Routes for timing.

A Sea-Me radar target enhancer would be a useful purchase.

Boatman61 has got it in one. It's because I want to enjoy NY Harbour on my boat. It seems to me a very sexy idea to sail past the Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island on my very own boat. You hear about it, read about it & now I have the opportunity to do it. Then to go through East River under all those bridges into Long Island Sound & onto Rhode Island & Newport, the home of sailing, just sounds like something really worth doing. Not to mention Martha's Vineyard & Nantucket Islands.
I'm Australian & whilst I've been to NY a couple of times, the opportunity to see it from the water, sounds too good to pass up.
I do have Jimmy Cornell's book. I concluded that one way or another, I need to get up to about 40 degrees north to catch the Gulf Stream & winds from the west in June. If you've got info to the contrary or any useful info for that matter, I'll gladly listen to it.

Long time no chit chat. Jon & Kim were down for the weekend. Didn't get back from Oz until the day before Thanksgiving. Planning my trip north now & doing plenty of repairs & upgrades.
Won't write much in case I get into trouble from Cruisers Forum for using this as a chat line.
