Re: Med to Oz

It all depends on the route you want to take. Are you going around Africa or through the Suez Canal?

Your quickest way and safest way would be to ship the boat to Oz from the Med.

Re: Med to Oz

If Westwards, then you are in the Panama around now till May, so off from the Med about two months earlier. The last leg to Oz is often done towards the beginning of austral summer - say November/December. Doing it earlier is an option, but going the last leg later exposes you to some risk from tropical systems.

If you are deep in the Med, you may consider moving your boat towards the Gibraltar/Algarve towards the autumn - it is not much fun to sail from Turkey to Gibraltar in the winter!

The time you need is the distance divided by speed average and then chuck in some extra for Panama Canal formalities and transit. Not likely any less than 4-5 months, I believe.

Cheers,

Re: Med to Oz

To decide you need to ask yrself four basic questions:

-where from the Med are we talking about, Med is 2.000 nm wide.. and in winter months is more dangereous than any Ocean.
-what kind of risk you want to take
-what part of the Australia are you planning to go , west or east ?
-what kind of crew do you have ?

If you want to do it style and are not in hurry, I would go through the Panama channel, waiting for the appropriate seasons for each passage. If you want to hit east Australia that's even better.
If you want to take some risk and are not far west of the Med, you could try yr chance through the gulf af Aden (I wouldn't, but I have a friend who does it to Philippines every year..) This is by the way the shortest route, particularly for the west Australia.
The last option is the cape Horn. From thereon, the conditions probably will be on the limit of Belize, you need a very strong team..

In any case the last two options are not the routes that you would like to do with yr wife and friends..

If none of the options are for you, plan to send yr boat by a ship. I see lot of boats being carried by ship from Malaysia and Philippines to Marmaris and the price could be worth checking from Marmaris back to those destinations.
Cheers

Errrr: one can also sail Westwards out of the Med onwards via Brazil to RSA then onwards via the S Indian?

Sort of like via the Horn except might be a bit easier. Boreal summer/fall out to RSA then onwards in austral summer. 3-4 months?
