Marathon to Wilmington - Inside?? or outside?

I have been asked to assist in the delivery of a 46 SV from Marathon FL to Wilmington NC. I have 15 years experience in FL and Bahamas waters, but none north of the Fl / GA Line. This trip will start next week, and any and all advice given for recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

Probably the most important question is to stay inside or try outside. Each has it's own provisioning, safety, and awareness factors.

Many Thanks Pete Raby

If well founded a 46 footer should handle outside all the way to NC. Is it a true delivery where time is important or is it part cruise as well?

Even in a delivery, assuming the boat has a mast height above water of less than 63 feet - traveling outside and inside is the normal route. When weather is good, outside is shorter and faster. But when the weather is bad you can still make miles north using the ICW instead of laying idle waiting for the next acceptable weather.
- - Be sure to have the ICW chartbook and guides, which are especially important for up to date locations of services and assistance, anchorages, and dockage along your journey.
- - It is also highly advisable to make sure the boat has Towing Insurance from BoatUS and/or SeaTow so that should something happen you will not get involved in a raft of hassles and problems.

Re: Marathon to Wilmington - Inside?? or outside?

Decision really depends on a lot of additional factors but mainly how much time you have for the trip. If you are in no hurry at all then going inside will be quite scenic and overall great trip. If this is a delivery with a deadline then you will get there a lot faster, weather permitting, if you go outside.

Another major consideration will be draft. Especially parts of GA the channel can be shoaled up a lot requiring you transit sections only at high tide. Again if you have the time this is not a problem if you can wait and time your passages through the shallow sections.

Additional perk to going outside is you will have the Gulf Stream giving you an extra kick north if you are far enough offshore to catch the ride.
