Inside Passage Info

We are going up the Inside Passage on a 33' sailboat this summer. Any helpful info on anchorages, clam beds, side trips, etc. would be appreciated. I think we may make it up as far as Juneau. 2/3mo. trip

'Passage to Jueau' by Jonathan Raban is a good book about the route. Has a lot of history of Vancouver's original exploration, etc. Not a cruising guide but a very interesting read.

It's getting a bit dated for the information about the towns and marinas, but _Cruising Beyond Desolation Sound_ by John Chappell has excellent information about achorages on the section from Georgia Strait to Cape Caution.

I don't have anything in my library about anything beyond that. There's several new guides/updates in the past year or so, including a new Dreamspeaker series of for the Inside Passage route iirc.

When are you planning on leaving? I am planning to go as far as Prince Rupert and returning taking VI on the west side back to Victoria. I am planning for mid June departure. I am looking at about 8 weeks but schedule is written in mush. Retired then. LOL

Up until AK the Waggoner book is good. If you are adventuresome, the Queen Charlottes were the hit of our trip up and back.

The inside passage is one of the more beautiful places around Vancouver Island. One of the must see places on my list would be Telegraph cove, nice old whaling town. There are three narrows which have to be passed at slack tide, and I have found that the tide book, "Ports & Passes" (found at any local marina here), to be invaluable. It is good from Bellingham Wa. to Juneau Ak, giving the tides (Slack and floods for the passes) in local time (no screwing around converting to daylight saving or adding time from a base station).
As far as places to go or anchorages to be had, all is good and too many to list, you'll have a great time, and keep an eye open for Orca whales, they transit the strait that time of year.

...to be a bit dreary. The exigence driving the writing seemed to be Raban wrapping his head around his divorce. Writing the book was undoubtedly better therapy for Raban than reading the book was for me. I was especially disappointed because I'd thoroughly enjoyed a previous book, Old Glory, about a trip he'd taken down the Mississippi.
