Smile Florida-Bound Sailors, Please Read

ahoy, all Quebec sailors going to Florida, I am a member of a forum whose members are mostly in the US and many in Florida. There seems to be a fair amount of hostility from the US members towards the sailors from Quebec, now, don't get you knickers in a twist just yet !@!!\

Seems there sailors who just tie up uninvited at private homes to take on water
, no permission asked, seems they love to sail down the centre of the icw which is really quite narrow, seems they don't listen to vhf 16 and get all upset when a power boat passes, these seem to be the majority of complaints , but there are others.

Now, PLEASE, pass this around to all the sailors you know including Yacht Clubs,
we know that some power boaters are real jerks but most of the Yachtsman in Florida are responsible, pleasant people and remember, you are guests in there neck of the woods.

This is posted as an attempt to make all cruisers life a little more pleasant out on the water.

Many thanks,
Dennis

Maybe I am not reading deep enough into the threads? I have found our northern neighbors quite an enjoyable lot........i2f

Quebec sailors have a bad reputation on the waterway. I don't think this is deserved but rather they got this rep because they usually speak French on the vhf and most other folks don't understand the language. This I think is the main reason they are seen as undesirables and you hear all sorts of rumours regarding Quebec sailors. Tying up uninvited is just another of those rumours. Also when something goes missing they are always blamed. The ones I have met have invariably been as nice as the English speaking sailors.

When I was in New Zealand last year I noticed that they always blamed Australians for whatever was missing, or wrecked, thrown overboard, etc.

Probably another language problem.

Surely if in the US and navigating the waters, one one use the local language ? US English.
Failure to do so in an accident may leave the visitor liable and without their vessel.

I can't agree with any of the generalized characterizations you made about Canadians from Quebec. In fact, I'm happy to find a Canadian flag flying whenever I'm anchored with a group of boats and have shared many good times with many Canadians.

I consider them welcome to our boating community and am glad to see any Canadian visiting our country.

No. 99% of the chit chat on the vhf is inane conversation.

Thanks, Jeffrey, I was just expressing the sentiments of your fellow Countrymen
in my post, I had originally been chastised for standing up for my fellow Canadiens, so I guess I lose both ways, sure glad of my Irish birth......love your site when I cruise Florida.

I particularly like the translation of "knickers in a twist."

I like the Canadians that make it down here to the Keys. Friends of mine that work in restaurants and bars would appreciate it if they learned our tipping standards.
