Cruising from Australia to South East Asia - cyclon season

Hi, we are cruising the Australian east coast at the moment and were considering going from north Queensland to Indonesia and then get into south east asia. The main issue to take in consideration is whats the lapse of time we can trust on the weather forecast for cyclons predictions and how long would it take us to cross to Indonesia. Is it possible to take the trip knowing there will be no cyclons at that time? Also, if you think its ok to do it, wich way would you take? how long is it?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Cruising from Australia to South East Asia - cyclon season

Cyclone season is summer in Aus. Dec through to the end of feb primarily. However once you get inisde 5 degrees nth-sth of the equator you are relatively safe from cyclones. Although wind may be slight and variable. ( its not called the doldrums for nothing)

With that in mind there are lots of places to safely cruise in Indonesia that will be relatively safe from Cyclones.

Crossing to indo is quite fast assuming you are leaving from Darwin. East Timor (although still somewhat unstable) is only three days away, even if you average only a 100 nm a day.

Ambon is only 550 nm away. 5 days sail. Depending your departure time, the Darwin Ambon race might be a nice option for you. Darwin to Ambon Yacht Race & Rally

Re: Cruising from Australia to South East Asia - cyclon season

Have a look at the BOM web site, In addition to their weekly cyclone outlook they have a map with all the cyclone tracks for the last couple of decades.

I would join one of the rally's which depart from Darwin mid year; outside the cyclone season, a lot of the messy bureaucratic stuff taken care of, and lots of other boats to socialize and swap info and skills with.
