Re: Civilization

I would love to claim an island for myself and a girl.

I'm not sure how long I would be able to last since I am addicted to news. I have gone 14 days in the back country in New Mexico before with zero outside contact. It was strange when you start to wonder what is happening other places or if some major event took place that you know nothing about.

Like everything else in the world it just takes money...

Philippines Real Estate

There are lots of islands in the Philippines and Indonesia and in fact just about everywhere. Getting a hold of them is problematic but not insurmountable.

One of the best thing about cruising is you "can" get off the beaten track and spend a few days on an uninhabited island. Just gotta get out there, get motivated and keep a fairly low profile. Once paradise is "discovered" it is only a metter of time before it turns to doo-doo.

Re: Civilization

Other than Antarctica, all the land is already owned by one country or another, meaning you have to abide by their laws. I don't know of any countries that allow you to squat wherever you wish. Maybe I am wrong and there are countries that allow squatters?

The only persons allowed to live on Cocos Island are Costa Rican Park Rangers, who have established two encampments, including one at English Bay. Tourists and ship crew members are allowed ashore only with permission of island rangers, and are not permitted to camp, stay overnight or collect any flora, fauna or minerals from the island.

So that one is scratched from your dreams.

The PNW islands off B.C. are mostly occupied; besides, you need appropriate fishing/hunting licenses, which as an alien you would not be able to obtain without a guide in Canada.

There goes that idea.

Next?

Re: Civilization

Ram-the concept of "adverse possession" comes from Old English law and still holds in many places. If you possess the land, openly, for certain periods, usually somewhere around 7 years, and its owner does not take action to remove you, you can claim ownership via "adverse possession" meanimg adverse to the real owner's claim. Doesn't happen often, but it can still be done. Comes from the Olde English idea that land should be used productively rather than just lying fallow.

The folks that are moving into repossessed homes and squatting are, in many cases, filing adverse possession claims claiming the banks, as owners, have abandoned the property. Those folks invariably lose and get kicked out.

Re: Civilization

A neighbor did just that in a residential development near Wilmington, Delaware. He tended the empty lot next to his without hearing a peep from the owner, a major trust foundation. After seven years, he filed under "adverse possession". He won.

p.s. he was a lawyer.

To the OP...

Actually, you can still squat in the Philippines if no one claims it for the period of time and that you have been developing the land and if your Filipino!

My wife's family recently lost a chunk of land to squatters that was land locked within others property (squatters) who claimed it by default (no access/roads).
