best route to Camp Lejuene

I have to go down to Camp Lejuene NC in a couple of months. I thinking of taking the week off and sailing from DC to the base. Has anyone in the forums made the trip, if so can you make some recommendations. I have not started planning, but will start tomorrow.

Thanks
Jason

check with your local Marine recruiter. He'll make all the travel arrangements for you. Sorry, former Navy guy, couldn't resist.

Just Made the trip from Deale MD TO S Fl.Anchored at Hammock Bay Close enough.Went S thru the Bay To AICW keept going S along AICW.Not a bad trip can move in any weather, crossed Bouge Sound in 20 plus knt Norther,no problem,IMO going in and outside has no advantage to time spent going down.Depending on boat type and speed about 6 or 7 days,I,was on a 38 Cabo Rico Sail.

We sailed through Lejeune on our trip down the ICW. Couldn't miss it as you pass through a live fire area with signs all over.

Not sure where to leave a boat as all that section was NO TRESPASSING but looks like coming south from DC turn right at the New River and find a marina. Should put you pretty close.

You might want to spell it right when you get there or suffer some serious hazing.

Re: best route to Camp Lejuene

I was the commodore for the Ragged Point Yacht Club for a couple years. The New River is a great place to sail, and a great place to have a sailboat. Draft of less then 6' is implied in the rest of what I will post... much over 6' and I would have different advice.

The trip down the Bay and the ICW is a great journey, have made it several times and it includes some of the best parts of the ICW. Give yourself about 2 weeks for the trip if you can, always best to take your time on the trip.

You will not want to miss the Dismal Swamp, do not listen to the ney sayers...

Here are a couple links that you may find helpful.

Delivering Ariel Spirit and s/v Faith The second link has pictures of Gottchalks marina, one of 2 marinas (both allow live aboards) aboard Lejeune. Feel free to PM or post any questions.

I know you said take two weeks, but I really only could take one? Would trip still be worth it?

Could it be done?

Yes. It would be long days, with little room for problems (mechanical, grounding, etc).

It can be done in a week.... a long week.

I know 30 years ago there was a Marina at New River Air Statiion and another one at Camp LeJune. But they was for service members only and always had a waiting list. I would make a few calls to make sure you can get dock space first.

Yes, there are actually 2 marinas onboard Camp LeJune, and one on the New River air station. Since the OP said he was headed to "Camp Lejuene" it seems reasonable to assume he is active/retired military or DOD employed civilian with access to the base. But you are right, there are limits on who can use the facilities.

Might you have any specifics?
Max length? Cost per foot? Availability?
