Are more sailors leaving U.S. for extended cruising?
Seems to me, from my little perspective on the west coast of Florida, that an increasing number of sailors have been planning to or have made plans for extended cruising outside of the U.S. in the past couple of years. Are any cruisers "outhere" seeing an increase. My greatest fear is that more people are discovering what we're doing and now want ot get in on the action
Are there more U.S. boats outside of the country. If so, maybe I'll just stay here
cheers,
mm

You may want to stay home. Baby boomers are beginning to retire, and a significant number of us who were born in the 1950s have the itch to cruise.
Give it a couple decades, and most of us will get over it.

Don't know, but I would go before the world becomes even more homogenized. I'm still waiting for a certain thing to happen before I can go. I wish I could go now.

I'm still a year from departing to see the world from the deck of a small sailboat. I wish I had been born in 1900 -- I would much rather have seen the world in the early 1900s than the early 2000s. I'm afraid it's pretty much too late -- the world is pretty much homogenized. Of course, that's not going to stop me. I just may have to work harder to find some places that have not completely become Westernized.

I dont know, I had the impression the cruising peak was over....maybe not...? A good gauge might be the number of boats in Georgetown Bahamas in March....

Interesting article in Nov 11 Cruising World by Jimmy Cornell - he has been collecting data since 1984; as of 2010 he estimates about 10,000 boats out in the big world engaged in long term cruising. He says the number has dipped in recent years due to economic meltdown and safety concerns. He breaks the numbers down by regions - concludes that while there may be fewer world voyagers overall, some areas have experienced growth (e.g. Caribbean).

We've noticed a lot of Canadian boats leaving the Abacos and heading home.

Jane,
Thanks for your input...
Have you seen many Euro-vessels in the Keys lately?

Not many European flags - lots of Canadians as well as Americans. Most of the cruisers we have met (ICW, Bahamas, Keys, in the past six months) don't aspire to big water crossings or transiting the Panama Canal. Lots of seasonal travel, Caribbean, ICW, and Great Loop cruisers. And of course, here in the Keys, LOTS of live-aboards!

Re: Are more sailors leaving U.S. for extended cruising?
I retire in Nov and will be OUT there for a few years, on and off...
A little hint, the BEST places left to explore HAVE NO WIFII....
Find them and you won't have to worry about the "I can't leave home w/o ,,,,,,,,crowd". They'll all be hunkered around a wifii connection,,,,
